The Mysteries of the Supernals

To the gentle reader. In this short essay I will reveal some concepts which are normally the prerogative of initiates. However, what I will say is only a bleak shadow of the true oral transmission and may take you nowhere without a proper initiation and consequent tuition. I have decided to lift up just a small part of the veil so that you may be able to better distinguish the true teachers from the false ones. I will discuss the nature of initiation and why it is emphasised in Traditionalist bodies of initiates. Of course, “Adepts” with prejudices and issues with killing darlings will find my words alien or extraterrestrial. But let the one who has eyes to read, read my words throughly. To the ignorant puffers I say: “Talk not of matters that you do not comprehend.” Hekas, Hekas, Este Bebeloi!

What truly distinguishes Traditionalist fraternities from post-modernist reconstructions is the former’s emphasis that the Grades of the Rosicrucian Order are not mere symbolical or administrative but more so real in a spiritual and physical sense. The Tree of Life (as distinguished from the Tree of Knowledge) has as its aim to transmute the initiate, in a factual sense which have immediate spiritual, psychological and physical results. My own experience of the initiations of the Golden Dawn is that they indeed have this potential, especially in the Grades of the Second Order. I haven’t been the same man after I have walked out from such a initiation when properly performed.

Another big difference between Traditionalist Orders and that of reconstructionist is the emphasis on the initiatory path. Many reconstructionists regard “initiation” to be a general term for magical and spiritual development. It is not. Granted, there is a initiatory process but this is only facilitated by the adjacent initiation ceremonies. And yes, it is true that initiations by themselves won’t facilitate the necessary transmutation for each Grade; they must be complemented by the personal work of the initiate. And this last rule also applies to the Outer Order Grades, which is the reason why the Rosicrucian Order of Alpha et Omega® reformed the First Order or the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn® into a truly magical Order.

That said, the personal magic may only be unlocked magically through the primary and preliminary initiation ceremony. The ceremonies activates of ignites certain powers within the Sphere of Sensation of the initiate which are subsequently used to optimally perform the corresponding personal magical and alchemical operations. This is done through the intermediary of the Initiator and the forces active in the Hall in which the initiation ceremony is performed. This is traditionally referred to as the “yeast”.

Thus the concept of Self-Initiation falls flat on the ground. Individuals espousing Self-Initiation have no clue of what it means to administer proper initiation; they only regard the Grades to be symbolical and administrative (i.e. providing temporal power and building hierarchy in a fraternity). This is the view which espouses the attitude that a Grade within a Fraternity only is relevant to that peculiar fraternity, even within a Golden Dawn context. Thus a Grade is nothing more than a badge and the proof that the initiate has mastered a certain level of occult knowledge and a basic (as in minimal) level of magical experience appropriate for that Grade. It doesn’t say anything about the spiritual and energetic level of that person.

A Traditionalist Order on the other hand holds that an initiation properly administered and performed creates an entirely different human. This outcome or state of being cannot be simply understood in the context of the fraternity which granted the initiate this unfoldment but should be able to be observed phenomenologically by anyone who has the eyes to see. A clairvoyant person is able to detect the correct symbols and colours of the Sphere of Sensation of such a initiate. Paul Foster Case (which was a initiate of the Alpha et Omega) stated that if it was possible to gauge the blood in a sufficient way the blood sample of a Adept would greatly differ from that of a Neophyte.

However, this also implies the concept of “apostolic succession”. This yeast is transmitted from initiator to initiate, which in turn will through a future initiator be transmitted further to the next generation of initiates. Thus it can be likened to an Olympic Torch which is passed on from athlete to athlete. This fire, a internal fire, is the yeast that I am referring to here. This yeast is also transmuted further through the initiation ceremonies, each ceremony adapting or calibrating that transmitting power of transmutation from the Hierophant in accordance with the corresponding Grade.

What the Traditionalist Orders also profess is that this kind of initiatory process is in need of this kind of yeast or transmuting power throughout the Grade system, i.e. from the level of 0°=0° Neophyte to that of 10°=1° Ipsissimus. This means that initiation ceremonies are needed for all of the Grades on the Tree of Life, also those beyond the Abyss. So contrary to what certain self-proclaimed expounders of the Alpha et Omega tradition asserts, the initiatory system doesn’t end after the Adeptus Exemptus 7°=4° Grade. After reading this essay you will understand why. 

I challenge any such false prophet to provide source material which proves that there is anything in the AO corpus which states that initiations beyond the Abyss is not possible. Let me make a prediction: they (i.e. the false prophets) won’t provide you with any as there are non.

Let me give you a tentative answer to why such false notions may have infested the Golden Dawn community vis avi the Alpha et Omega. I will give you two well respected names, quite well known authors in the occult communites: Paul Foster Case and Dion Fortune (aka Violeth Firth). Both of these persons were former initiates of the Rosicrucian Order of Alpha et Omega, both during the 1920’s. Both became advanced to the 5°=6° Grade of Adeptus Minor and were relatively short lived members, being expelled soon after reaching that minor Grade of Adepthood.

Granted, both of them were close friends with the Chiefs of their respective Temples and apparently received private tuition from them. However we must also remember that both were members of the Alpha et Omega several years after the death of S.L. MacGregor Mathers, who during his last remaining years had lost contact with his Secret Chiefs. These were also the times when Theosophy was in vogue and who by then through Annie Besant and C. W. Leadbeater had developed the concept of Mahatmas on the Inner Planes (or “ascended masters”) which differed from the original concept of physical Mahatmas of H.P. Blavatsky.

Now what did these two former Alpha et Omega Adepts state regarding the highest level possible of ceremonial or physical initiation? Let us start with Paul Foster Case who says the following:
In the ceremonials of the Chapters of Working Builders of the Adytum, there are no ritual presentations of Ageless Wisdom beyond the grade corresponding to Tiphareth, the sixth Sephirah. All initiations beyond this point are interior. (The Master Pattern, Lesson 7.)
So according to Case it is superfluous to receive ceremonial initiation beyond the Adeptus Minor 5°=6° Grade. He states that all initiation from the level of Adeptus Major 6°=5° Grade and beyond is only “internal”, i.e. not dependent on another human. Notice however that Case is still referring to a initiatory process here. And as he certainly wasn’t a modernist reconstructionist he must have been referring to a agency of an outside force, which is the only proper way of receiveing initiation. Thus he is referring to spirit guides here, or Guardian Angels.

Surely enough, during and after the Adeptus Minor 5°=6° Grade, a Knowledge and Conversation with the Holy Guardian Angel is a necessary prerequisite to fully integrate the senior Grades and properly perform their required personal work. But this personal relation with one’s own Guardian Spirit is not enough. There also has to be performed the external ceremony and the further cooking of the yeast (transmission of current from initiator to initiate), so to speak. As a matter of fact the Adeptus Minor 5°=6° Grade is only the first step of a entire cycle of initiations which is “ended” in that of the Adeptus Exemptus 7°=4°.

This initiatory cycle or process of the Adepti Grades is already foreshadowed in the Neophyte 0°=0° Grade and is based on a ancient initiatory formula, drawning on the classical tales of the Egyptian pantheon, in particular that of Osiris, Isis, Set and Horus. The short version of this (I already told you that this would be one of my “shorter” essays) is that the Adeptus Minor 5°=6° Grade concerns the passion of the Adept, through pain and suffering (the Death). The Adeptus Major 6°=5° Grade ceremony takes off from this and depicts the loosening of the Soul’s shackles from the dead body and its descent into Hades or Hell; the post-mortem Journey of the Soul (the Separation). While the Adeptus Exemptus 7°=4° Grade seamlessly expounds upon the mysteries of the re-animation of the body after the re-uniting with its Soul (the Resurrection).

As you can see, there are actually not three distinct initiations but rather One Great Initiation in three parts. So can you now see the futility in regarding any ceremonial initiations beyond that of the gory death process of the Adeptus Minor 5°=6° Grade to be superfluous? It can be compared to only initiating someone to the “Earthy” Zelator Grade of 1°=10° and denying the initiate to experience the other three Elements. In a way the so-called “Elemental” Grades of the First Order are likewise interlinked and should be regarded to be but One process in four parts instead of four different stages.

Let us now turn to the words of our second source behind this fallacy or delusion of no physical initiations beyond the Abyss, that of Dion Fortune in her discourse on the Sephirah Chesed (which corresponds to the 7°=4°):
A very important and very imperfectly understood part in the Mysteries is played by those beings who are generally called the Masters. Different schools define the term differently, and some include living adepts of a high grade among the Masters; but we consider that it is advisable to make a distinction between the incarnate and disincarnate Elder Brethren because their mission and mode of function are entirely different. The title of Master should therefore be given only to those who are free from the wheel of birth and death. In the terminology of the Western Esoteric Tradition the grade of Adeptus Exemptus is assigned to Chesed, the term Exemptus, or exempt, indicating that freedom from karma which liberates from the Wheel. […] such persons, if the grade be a functioning one and not a mere empty honour, are karma-free and will not reincarnate. Such persons might justly be termed Masters, for their consciousness is of the grade of a Master, but as it is so necessary to make the distinction between incarnate and disincarnate adepts, it is better to qualify the classification by this minor distinction than to allow to humans a prestige which human nature is not fitted to bear. As long as an adept is incarnated he will be liable to human frailties in some degree, and to the limitations imposed by old age and physical health. It is not until he is free from the Wheel, and functions as pure consciousness, that he will escape from human bondage to heredity and environment; therefore the same reliance cannot be placed in him that can be placed in the true, disincarnate Masters. (The Mystical Qabalah, Chapter XVII.)
So it seems that Fortune at least makes allowance for initiates to inhabit the earth plane as Adepti Majori but not as Adepti Exempti, who are considered to be discarnate ascended Masters. With a more liberal interpretation Fortune may also have meant that when a living person had reached that final state, when he or she after death wouldn’t need to reincarnate, then he or she would also be considered to be a Master and thus a Adeptus Exemptus. This may somewhat be corroborated with Aleister Crowley’s view that the Adeptus Exemptus Grade corresponds with the attainment of a Bodhisattva of the East, i.e. someone who has reached to the brink of Nirvana but sacrificed the final transcendence out of compassion for humanity.

However, an Adeptus Exemptus is neither a Master nor a Bodhisattva. He is “merely” someone who has persevered through the initiatory ordeal of death, separation and resurrection. He is someone that has become a new-born human who are freed from the limitations and shackles of the animal and emotional self. Although he is not part of ordinary humanity in this capacity, he is also still a human as he has yet not transcended beyond the manifest and temporal world of the Microprosopus in the Macrocosm and the Ruach of the Microcosm. Thus he still partakes of the Wheel of Samsara.

Mastery belongs to the three Supernal Grades or the Magisteria. It concerns the final stage of the initiatory process whereby the three subtle bodies are finally prepared in the alchemical process. The Magister Templi 8°=3° Grade concerns the final development of the Lunar (astral) body, the Magus 9°=2° Grade the development of the Mercurial (mental) body, and finally the Ipsissimus 10°=1° Grade the development of the Solar (spiritual) body of light. It is at the level of Ipsissimus that we may speak of the true equivalent of the Bodisattvas of the West and the final liberation from reincarnation.

Finally, if looking at the initiatory process through the Tree of Life as a continuous process (which it truly is) of alchemy you will easily correspond them to the three or four Alchemical Stages, the entire First Order (corresponding to the Black Pillar and the Banner of the West) to the Black Stage or Nigredo, the Neophyte Grade serving as a preliminary preparation of the Matter prior to the process proper (which by the way doesn’t include sub-stages of “black of black”, “yellow of black”, etc., as suggested by a recent puffery book on Golden Dawn Alchemy), the entire Second Order (corresponding to the White Pillar and the Banner of the East) to the White Stage or Albedo, the passing of the Abyss (the Babe of the Abyss) to the Yellow Stage or Citrinas, while the entire Third Order properly would correspond to the Red Phase of Alchemy or Rubedo.

Considering this perspective, gentle reader, does it seem logical to you to cut off the initiatory process and thereby the alchemical process of transmutation just prior to the Yellow and Red Stages, when you have gone through the entire ordeal to purify your body and soul through the washing work of the White Stage? Doesn’t it seem reasonable to you that this entire process may be performed while you are incarnated and “alive”? Doesn’t it seem plausible even that reaching that final and desired stage of “becoming more than human” actually requires you passing the Abyss while still living on Earth? No? Think again.

Proof that the profaned A∴O∴ 6°=5° ritual was only the 4th part of a larger initition ceremony

A couple of days ago there were a discussion on a reconstructionist yahoo-forum, attacking the position of the Rosicrucian Order of  Alpha et Omega® that the A∴O∴ 6°=5° ritual recently profaned in a book on the so-called “Westcott Tablets” (although it had absolutely no relevance to the subject matter of the book) is only the 4th part of a larger ritual. The evidence that the Alpha et Omega® put forward is that on the frontispiece of that manuscript there was a large number “4” besides the words “G.D. 6=5”.  (See image at the heather taken from a copy regularily received from the original source and owner of that document.)

Pat Zalewski and Sam Scarborough refutes this position saying that the published version in the said book was the complete one. The proof is that G.H. Fra. F.F.J. (Dr. Carnegie Dickson) wrote a “lengthy” introduction to the document, which is seen as unorthodox thing to do if it is supposed to be the 4th part of a larger ritual. They also assert that it is even more unorthodox to let the candidate go through the “rituals” of the 22nd and 23rd paths in a 4th and last segment of the ritual together with the “ritual” of the 6°=5°. They also point out that the number “4” actually is a reference to the document being the 4th copy, and that it was common practice to apply this enumeration system to a set of several loan copies used for circulation and personal copying in the G∴D∴ and S∴M∴. The published part of the 6°=5° ritual has also been compared to the original G∴D∴ and A∴O∴ Portal Ceremony and that they seem to be very similar in function. Thus it has been suggested that they possibly had the same author and were written during the same time period (i.e. prior to the 1900-schism).

Together with Nick Farrell they assert that everything that has been published during the last year or so is the sum total of the GD and AO (together with all of the previously published material) and that it proves that the position of the Alpha et Omega® in this matter is utterly false. Is it? I beg to differ. What has happended during these recent events is rather that these reconstructionist leaders of the Order of the Golden Dawn (Pat Zalewski), Ordo Stella Matutina (Sam Scarborough) and the Magical Order of the Aurora Aurea (Nick Farrell) are simply being aggravated that the Alpha et Omega® has called their bluff about the "secret" and "lost" A∴O∴ 6°=5° ritual to actually be the 4th and final part of it.

Let us take their arguments apart one by one, and (with the exception of my last point) refrain from using anything else but the published material as evidence (which is the only one that the reconstructionists acknowlege):

1. That F.F.J. (Carnegie Dickson) has written an introduction to the 4th Part is not at all solid evidence that it is the full ritual. The possibility cannot, in all academic and scientific fairness, be excluded that F.F.J. actually wrote an introduction to each of the 4 parts of the 6°=5° ritual. We do know from other AO documents, bearing his official approval, that he had that quirk of appending lots of comments to the original texts. Besides, it is obvious, in reading his published introduction that it only addresses the contents of the 4th part and its task of conferring signs belonging to the two paths leading to Geburah and the sephirah Geburah itself. It doesn’t present itself to be an analysis of the entire 6°=5° initiation ceremony.

2. That the big number “4” on the cover denotes “Copy No. 4” is a long stretch in my opinion. It’s true that the loan copies in the orignal G∴D∴ had numbers relating to each of the copies, but standard protocol was also to write the words “loan copy” or “official loan copy No. x” etc. So, would that part of the 6°=5° ritual actually had been the entire ritual the attached number “4” would most probably have been preceded by these very same words and thus been spelled in full as the “Loan copy No. 4”.

3. If the number “4” actually had been a reference to the 4th loan copy it must have meant that it was at least 4 copies that were circulated amongst the membership. What in particular speaks against the number “4” as being a reference to a “loan copy”, regularly being handed out to the newly admitted Adepti Majori, is that on the title page it actually says with heavy underlining: “(Not to be copied)”. To be initiated into the 6°=5° was a true privilege then as it is now. While the 5°=6° was used regularly each year to initiate members into adepthood an masse, the actual number to receive the 6°=5° were very rare indeed and few in between, perhaps performed once with one candidate every decade or so. Would it then had required at least a total of 4 loan copies or more to be circulated, if there were so few candidates for advancement to the 6°=5° or almost none? No, of course not. My theory is that it only existed one copy and that it was presented to be studied by the initiate under strict supervision and with severe prohibition to copy anything from it, as it is done in Freemasonry (at least in my local lodge).

4. That paths (and adjacent tarot cards, etc) are mentioned in the last part of the ritual may seem odd at first, but if you understand what that ritual is supposed to deliver magically, you also understand that it would feel most logical and workable to put all “intellectual information” last, which also was the protocol of most G∴D∴ and freemasonic style rituals. That is, it is protocol to put the intellectual and instructional segment, and the conference of grade signs, etc., at the last part of the initiation ritual also in the Outer Order Grade rituals. As the 4th part of the 6°=5° ritual is structured, it is not concerned with an actual ritual of advancement through these paths but simply constitutes a transmission of secret instructions concerning them. The actual ritual initiations would have been done in the previous parts of the ritual.

Now, my gentle reader, let me present to you my own arguments why it is futile or baroque even to believe the 4th part to be the entire ritual of the 6°=5°:

1. The title is the most revealing. It has an overall or general title and a sub-title. The general title is: “Ritual of the 6°=5° Grade of Geburah”. The subtitle is: “The Book of the Conference of Signs in the Grade of Adeptus Major”. Notice especially that the sub-title says “Conference of Signs in the Grade of...” This to me is a clear reference that it is that part of the ritual which deals with the grade signs only. Thus the general title puts the document in its proper context as a part of the 6°=5° initiation ceremony, while the sub-title denotes the actual title of the 4th part.

2. The lack of an opening and closing is an even more strong case aginst it being the sum total of the 6°=5° ritual. In all the previous rituals, even in the origial G∴D∴ and A∴O∴ Portal ritual (which the reconstructionists seem to believe the 6°=5° ritual was modelled upon) has a formal opening and closing. This is the standard protocol in all freemasonic bodies, and also the G∴D∴. The Grade of 6°=5° simply cannot be conferred without it.

3. And this is the most important (and the least likely to be accepted by the reconstructionists). The Rosicrucian Order of Alpha et Omega® knows for sure that MacGregor Mathers was in true communication with physical Secret Chiefs of the Third Order, who gave him the secret significance of the R.R. et R.C. initiation rituals. The magical task of the 6°=5° is substantial (that of alchemical separation between the Body and the Soul of the subject matter). The 4th part lacks all of that magical formula; it is simply the traditional masonic style instruction on the mysteries of the Paths and the Sephirah in question thrown into the end of the ritual, as with any of the Outer Order grade rituals. It is as we were trying to analyse the ritual of the 3°=8° without having access to the rituals of the 30th and 31st Paths; we would miss the majority of the magical content and ritual drama and therefore miss the entire purpose of it. Thus it is impossible that a 6°=5° ritual written by MacGregor Mathers, under the guidance of the Secret Chiefs, could had only amounted to this small rite, with no opening and closing and without any actual initiatory formula preceding these intructions.

Knowing what we in the Alpha et Omega® know about MacGregor Mathers initiations and the Secret Chiefs who initiated him, this is highly unthinkable and nigh impossible even what the reconstructionists propose. Being in communication today with that same source which provided MacGregor Mathers with the magical formulae of the 5°=6°, 6°=5° and 7°=4° Grades, we know that there were other parts to that ritual, parts that we today possess thank’s to the benign guidance of the Third Order.

But also without any references to the 3rd and last point of my argument, it stands clear, considering the factual evidence we all may study in that book which has profaned the 4th part of the 6°=5° ritual, that it is the least likely that in what has been published we see the entire ritual. Based upon that same source evidence that they themselves draw their own reconstructionist conclusions from, I have presented arguments which proves that it must have been simply the last part of a much longer and more magically substantial initiation ceremony. The only reason that the reconstructionists chooses to see it from their perspective, is twofold: (a) they lack any initiatic understanding of this exalted grade and the author behind the source text, and (b) because of that they have a political agenda of destroying the reputation of anyone, both in the past and in the present, who claims such a communication with the Third Order.

Furthermore, presenting the supposed AO 6°=5° ritual in only that narrow format it provides the reonstructionists with “evidence” that MacGregor Mathers took his AO into a “Masonic direction”, i.e. that it went in the opposite direction compared to the SM who developed the GD into a truly magical tradition. Thus it backs up the not so hidden political agenda of Nick Farrel’s Mathers’ Last Secret and King over the Water (the latter which I am soon about to review here on my blog). What we see here is yet another evidence of historical and scholarly considerations being sacrificed upon the altar of order politics.

A general boycott of blog trolls

Many of you who are following the Golden Dawns Flying Circus show are well aware that there is an all-out witch hunt raging against the brethren and sisters of the Rosicrucian Order of Alpha et Omega®, which has especially been intensified when we reacted strongly and passionately against Nick Farrells latest published attack on the Alpha et Omega (past and present) disguised as a scholarly work on history. During the past month we have seen reconstructionist bloggers attacking the integrity of our Order and our right to defend its honour. During this internet witch hunt we have in the first round seen the reconstructionist mob using fear mongering tactics and we have also seen them attacking our history how we precieve it, as well as our Secret Chiefs and initiatory system. During all of this time we have seen not only well known reconstructionist representatives acting as inquisitors, such as Deanna Bonds, Olen Rush, Morgan Drake Eckstein, and Joseph Max taking lead of the witch hunting posse, but also a host of anonmyous blog trolls of various kinds spreading unfounded lies against the Alpha et Omega®.

Now recently, the witch hunt has changed their public arena over to yahoo and its foremost reconstructionist forum, attacking our Orders (and my personal) view on God-Forms and that small part of the Alpha et Omega 6°=5° ritual which recently was profaned by the reconstructionist authors. The latest witch finder general being Pat Zalewski. In tandem with this new host of attacks on that recon-forum they have re-mobilized their old tactics of using anonymous and libelous blogs, mocking our Order and its Chiefs and spreading vileful lies about us. One such anonymous blog was created just a few days ago with the clear intent of mocking our Order and its Chief, and our Manifesto (which also has its Spanish version), as well as interpolating libelous lies. Even a equally mocking Facebook account was simultaneously created by the blog creator using the same mis-impersonation identity, with the expressed objective to promote his defamatory blog.

I find it then interesting to see that the professed recon-disciple of Mr. Zalewski, Morgan Drake Eckstein, who used to be a balanced and sober element in the reconstructionist community but recently has become one of the most rabid characters in this witch hunt posse, was the first individual on Facebook who linked to that anonymous defamation blog and also the very first one to accept the anonymous authors friendship on Facebook, on the very same day that these Google and Facebook accounts were created. Is it then surprising to see Mr. Eckstein being the first individual to post a comment over at that defamation blog and hailing him and his wits? Quite telling I must say.

Now, if you have been following this blog for the last years or so, you know my personal position on anonymous defamation blogs. If you remember all the way back to 2009 I had an encounter with an anonymous blog troll calling himself “Tommy” who had set up a libelous defamation blog against the Alpha et Omega®. If you still remember this encounter somewhat, I also tried to engage with him in a fraternal and scholarly manner, to no avail. He wasnt at all interested in any reasoned debate; he simply wanted me to further his propaganda and talking points. So I made everyone aware of my mistake and soon that blog was removed. My conclusion from that learning experience was: Dont feed the blog trolls!

That is also my recommendation to all serious initiates of the Golden Dawn community, reconstructionist and traditionalist alike. Dont give them any air to breath their venom unto the communty. It affects us all equally bad, regardless if we have a reconstructionist or traditionalist perspective on our beloved Golden Dawn tradition. It is the lowiest possible weapon to use in a political war; there is no excuse to resort to this kind of behaviour. To be honest, although Im not that overly surprised that a well known and professed recon-authority in the communty, Mr. Ecktstein who obviously loaths the Alpha et Omega® so much, has given this new blog troll recognition, it also makes me equally dissapointed. I though him to be better than that. What is the level that these individuals are able to stoop down to in the name of order politics?

Or is it perhaps so that Mr. Eckstein somehow is involved in that blogs creation? I am personally convinced that someone from the tiny group of recon-individuals that we have seen lately taking an active role in the witch hunt on the Alpha et Omega® is the actual creator of that blog, or at least has sanctioned its making. It would be a good thing if Mr. Eckstein officially distanced himself from the blog and its contents, and instead appologized to his brothers and sisters of the Alpha et Omega®. That is the only proper and decent way to do. As it stands today, he is directly linked to that defamation blog and the identity of its creator.

Addressing the new facts that has been raised regarding the A∴O∴ 6°=5° ritual

RECENTLY, in the commentary section of a anonymous hate blog attacking the Rosicrucian Order of Alpha Omega®, Pat Zalewski targeted yours truly while trying to uphold the counter-traditionalist stance on S.L. MacGregor Mathers and his developments of the higher Grades of the R.R. et A.C., in particular the Adeptus Major 6°=5° Grade which (in parts) was published over a year ago. I say “in parts” as it becomes clear to me, reading it, that it in highest probability constitutes the last part of a longer ceremony, structured according to the formula as is seen in the Outer Order. 

I have chosen to quote Mr. Zalewski in full so that the gentle reader may be aware of his usual rhetoric style, which is bullying to say the least. Although he presents some arguments against the actual thesis that I have proposed in this matter in my previous blog entitled Proof that the profaned A∴O∴ 6°=5° ritual was only the 4th part of a larger initiation ceremony, he resorts to the usual character assassination style which seems to be in vogue today. After some consideration, and the fact that his arguments and rhetoric is accessible on the blogosphere, I have decided to comment on them here. 

I have taken the liberty to re-edit Mr. Zalewski’s comment and to arrange it according to his different counter arguments, as he repeats himself in the original text. Regarding my thesis that the published version lacks any formal Opening and Closing, Mr. Zalewski has this to say:
One glaring example of Stacewicz at his historical best is his analysis, which is part of every historians stock and trade. The Golden Dawn 6=5 ritual, later used in the AO and Bristol temple of the SM in the 1950’s, essentially has a beginning , middle and end to it as one would expect from any ritual. Unfortunately it is extremely cramped but still contains all the elements or basic structure of a full ritual.
I still fail to see any “opening” and “closing” in that published text. There simply is none, only something that resembles an introduction as part of a longer speach, which isn’t an uncommon feature at all in ceremonies of this kind. Anyone with access to this ritual, looking in that book which profaned it, will be able to see for himself or herself what I mean. Even Mr. Zalewski himself agrees to call it an “introduction”, saying:
The initial speech of the Conferring Adept is a summary of the 6=5 and is an introduction, through cramped, but still an introduction why would it be included as a fourth part?
Why not? Like I said, it was common to make an introduction of some sorts, like a summary almost of the path that leads from an earlier Grade and Path to that of Geburah and the 6°=5° Grade, also in the Outer Order ceremonies when the candidate enters the last part of a particular Grade. I cannot see that this introductional speech should in any way be considered to be an equivalent of a formal Opening of the 6°=5° Grade. Besides, I am not the only one who has interpreted the published text as an extraction of a greater ritual. As an example Alex Sumner seems to back up my analysis in this respect when he says:
...the version published is not a real ritual. It does not have an opening or closing, nor does it have any drama in it. It consists of one chief officer, the “Conferring Adept,” teaching the signs and words of the grade to the Aspirant, who is prompted throughout the ceremony by a conductor. The explanation of the Tarot cards is brief. If anything, it is more of a fragment of a ritual - perhaps part of something that remains unpublished, or a work-in-progress. (Mr. Sumner's own emphasis)
Mr. Sumner is a quite renowned author on the occult in general and the Golden Dawn in particular. To me it seems that he is an independent and serious researcher, i.e. not prompted by any overly political agenda to uphold the anti- A∴O∴ paradigm so typical of the counter-traditionalist camp. I wonder, does the same verdict regarding my lacking analytical ability apply to him as well? Mr. Zalewski continues:
Aside from this, the notes prefacing the ritual clearly maintain that the history of this ritual in its complete form. Another version exists in the handwriting of Westcott and is identical in ritual content.
Actually, there exists a handwritten version of the same (portion) of that text, as is said in the mentioned prefacing note, but is is not in Westcotts handwriting but in J. W. Brodie-Innes or Sub Spes handwriting, which doesnt even resemble Westcotts.
The problem with the claims of this being a partial AO ritual is the preface by Carnegi [sic] Dickson (F.F.J) which clearly states the full contents of the 6=5 and structural integrity of the ritual itself.
I agree that the commentary of G.H. Fra. F.F.J. (Dr. Carnegie Dickson) makes a valid case against my thesis, i.e. that the original version of MacGregor Mathers 6°=5° Ceremony was much longer. But does it really disprove it? I can see at least three other alternatives, that (a) F.F.J. made several commentaries, one for each part that entirely focuses on that part, and (b) that the later A∴O∴ under Carnegie Dickson somehow had lost the other parts, and finally that (c) the other parts of the A∴O∴ 6°=5° were lost sometimes after the closure of the Hermes Temple in Bristol (the last Temple who performed the A∴O∴ 6°=5°).

Reading Carnegie Dickson’s commentary, I fail to see that he in any way makes any allusions that this is the only part, at least directly. I interpret Mr. Zalewski drawing such a conclusion from a supposed indirect reference, that because Carnegie Dickson only mentions the contents of the published part there cannot be anything else. In my opinion, that is not a optimal way to analyze history. As a researcher one has to be open to multiple interpretations. I agree that it may be interpreted that only this part of the Ceremony exists, but I also offer alternative possibilities. 
However the content of the ritual is clearly an embarrassment to anyone claiming AO lineage due to its brevity, lack of detail, balance and absence of insightfulness, especially when contrasting it with the 5=6 ritual. 
The question then arises of what to do to avoid embarrassment with this ritual once published, especially when claims of higher AO teachings from a supposed Third Order are being received are plastered all over the internet. The answer is simple enough, claim it was the fourth part of a larger ritual of the AO since the number was on the cover. Once this backed up by claims of having seen the full 6=5 ritual (and the inference of going through it) then it is done and dusted and the embarrassment is postponed, or is it?
It is because I have some insight into what the Third Order teaches about the 6°=5° and 7°=4°, and being informed that MacGregor Mathers also had access to these teachings, that I am able to make my analysis. Thus, my analysis is not simply a scholarly opinion, if you follow the standard academic criteria, but an opinion which more than this is based on my knowledge and experience as an initiate. This knowledge and experience makes me aware that the so-called A∴O∴ 6°=5°” (as published) cannot do the work and that it simply had to be the last part of a greater Ceremony. That it is the last part is an assumption that I base on its contents, following the general structure of the Outer Order ceremonies. My previous blog on this subject was not a “academic paper” or anything of that sort; it is simply me sharing my opinions based on my experience as a initiate in an Order which is under the guidance of that same Third Order which helped MacGregor Mathers develop the Second or Inner Order. 

You may or may not accept or agree with that premise. That is your own choice. I respect that, especially if you are outside the pale of that Third Order guidance. But these educated opinions should be able to be said out in the open without fear of being character assassinated. Anyone having the need to kill the messenger, such as me, clearly has an agenda to do that, which is beyond purely scholarly considerations. I choose to identify that agenda as a counter-traditional fear of the existence or potential existence of a still living Tradition under the aegis of a Third Order organized and structured under fraternal patterns, which entails the possibility of advanced initiates who are willing to transmit that Tradition to a external and visible vehicle, what has been referred to as “Secret Chiefs”. The possible existence of such continental initiates disqualifies the efforts of the counter-traditionalists to reconstruct the Tradition and their Towers of Babel.

The backbone of this ritual is the path analysis as seen through the signs, but also as part of an explanation of the lower grades which leads to the overall conclusion that this ritual was an anticlimax and more ad hoc than anything else due to its summary statis. So in the ritual itself we have a beginning, though brief, the signs and tarot cards of the paths, a summary of the elemental grades through the prism of the signs and names. The final speech of the Conferring Adept gives the grade and its closing. The pattern so far is the same as the outer order without the full opening, additional diagrams contrasting with the tarot nor having Geburah as a separate division. Yet we are informed by Stacewiczs [sic] that this is the fourth part only and any historian with a modicum of ability would question Stacewiczs’ [sic] claim.
Like I said, I don’t claim my previous blog post to be a academic historical paper. I don’t mind historians of that type to question it. What makes me surprised (and somewhat worried), however, is that supposed initiates, such as Mr. Zalewski, fails to see that esoteric teachings initiatically conferred which cannot be openly revealed, cannot be open to academic scrutiny. The mistake Mr. Zalewski, and his lot of counter-traditionalists, are doing is to substitute the historian for the initiate. I will first and foremost always be an initiate. If I can provide facts that are historically verifiable, I will do my best to reference them accordingly. But as an initiate I take the liberty to express propositions that are based on such esoteric and unpublished teachings that I am speaking about here, thus naturally disregarding the standard academic rigour of source referencing back to written documents.
Nick Farrel’s observations about the 6=5 and 7=4 rituals as possibly being created primarily as a money making enterprise by Mathers (even if his followers did not consider them so) bear some fruit due to the 6=5 being a terribly written, and by the look of it a hastily constructed ritual. The evidence Nick presents on the 6=5 payment can most likely be extrapolated to the 7=4 as well.
The interesting thing is that Mr. Zalewski is always backing up whatever Mr. Farrell claims in his “historical” books, and vice versa. That isn’t such a strange thing considering that they both stem in their lineage from the New Zeeland organization and Whare Ra derivative Order of the Table Round. Thus they share a common bond of fraternity and loyalty. They also share the same agenda, coming from the old rivalry between MacGregor Mathers and R.W. Felkin, between the Rosicrucian Order of Alpha Omega and the Stella Matutina. That agenda, which has a political aim (not occult), wants to discredit everything that MacGregor Mathers did after the schism in 1900 in an effort to elevate the validity of the Stella Matutina. Why? Because they know that the Stella Matutina is a clandestine organization and tradition which broke off from the Golden Dawn to form its own egregore, fully distinct from the Golden Dawn / Alpha Omega ditto. To rationalize and justify such a rebellion and breach of an initiate’s obligation, the Chief rebelled at has to be demonized, psychiatrically diagnosed and made incompetent. In this way they justify that the current of the Golden Dawn actually was lost in the A∴O∴ and transmitted to the Stella Matutina.
It also becomes very clear that Mathers did not originally intend to go past the 5=6 in content and that the GD subgrades were more or less the end of it apart from the 6=5 and 7=4 grade ceremonies. The descriptions of the GD tarot cards in the 6=5 ritual are very generalised ritual would indicate that a full AO deck was never completed, especially when this is combined with the tarot descriptions in the THAM papers. There is no real indication if Mathers wrote AO material for all the 5=6 levels above THAM, though I would suggest Brodie- Innes may have had a go at it. Another area to contrast is the Lockwood’s, who got a 7=4 from Mathers in Paris, yet brought back no additional papers beyond the 5=6 that we know of. There is no evidence that any of their papers above the 5=6 got to the AO temples in the US ,which is most peculiar and tends to lean towards what Nick has outlined.
I fully agree with Mr. Zalewski’s analysis regarding MacGregor Mathers never got to finishing the system beyond the sub-grades of the 5°=6°, at least not in written form. There may have been some oral transmission conferred of course. However, counter-traditonalists are generally skeptical of oral transmissions and teachings, as these cannot be verified by scholarly research. So they prefer to disregard or reject any such in the A∴O∴ (such as those that I express) while they acknowledge that these existed at least in the Stella Matutina. The question remains as to what sub-grade MacGregor Mathers wrote up his teachings and instructions. At least Theoricus Adeptus Minor for sure, but I find it as plausible that at least some parts of the Practicus Adeptus Minor were developed before he died in 1918.
It could be argued that when all of this is added to the fact that the Cromlech Temple produced a number of papers that any GD, SM and AO adept would find as advanced teachings, the need for this type of material was fulfilled, especially when Brodie Innes was writing much of the Cromlech papers. It is doubtful that B.I. wrote in parallel for the AO, covering similar material (such as the auric papers and teachings in the polarity of sexuality).
Perhaps the Solar Order papers gained importance after the death of MacGregor Mathers, and with not Secret Chiefs to guide the Order, but I really doubt that they were given any prominance during the reign of MacGregor Mathers or even in Moina Mathers London Temple. I guess that the Solar Order was integrated with the Amoun-Ra Temple (of Brodie-Innes) and later the Horus Temple in Bradford (with the help of Carnegie Dickson).
Stacewiczs [sic] as an historian is an absolute disaster on a number of levels. However the most telling tale of this is his blind acceptance that everything written down about Mathers and Secret Chiefs should be taken at face value. No historian trained academically would do this would do this unless they had the academic equivalent of an historical “brain fart”. There is a lack of questioning of the veracity of such statements by Mathers, and a lack of referencing for some outlandish statements. The first thing one learns as an historian is reductionism in presentation, and over lengthly [sic] diatribes does not show ones historical knowledge, but does indicate a lack analytical ability to focus on the essence of such matters and the inability to communicate ones viewpoint and inevitably to sustain an argument on historical gleanings.
Like I said in a previous blog post, it is wholly unrealistic to reference anything about MacGregor Mathers meetings with the Secret Chiefs, as these were obviously secret, unofficial and direct meetings in person. One simply has to accept the fact that some parts, or even major parts, of the proceedings and teachings of an Order cannot be reduced to academic research. It is a totally unlogical request for someone who is an initiate, unlike the academic scholar. Mr. Zalewski should know better than to ask such a thing. If not he should ask himself who he is foremost: an initiate or a academic. In my opinion, one cannot reconcile the former with the latter.

What Mr. Zalewski is calling a “brain fart” in my head I define as initiated knowledge. Like I said, I have no academic scholarly ambitions; I am an initiate, not a historian. Occultists are notorious as historians if you look back in history, starting with the Theosophic Society of H.P. Blavatsky and their ilk. As a rule, occultists don’t follow the standard academic rigor of source referencing and they often blend their own personal opinions with historical facts. A late example of this is Mr. Farrell latest books, Mathers’ Last Secret and King over the Water. And even if they do make some effort to source reference, they usually blend their own knowledge and experience with clean historical evidence. Thus, very few occult books meet the criteria of academic research. My opinion is that there is room for both in the same book; they are needed as two perspectives to approach the esoteric subject. But an esoteric author will never be able to submit his text as a scientific paper if he writes sincerely. Ask yourself, why esotericism has had such a hard time gaining acceptance as a serious academic field of investigation?

Regarding the verbosity of my writing, and the lack of focus, I tend to agree here. Strangely enough, I have had this deficiency since I started on the initiatic path in the early 1990’s. I cannot recall that I used to write long diatribes, or that I wrote much at all, before I started to study the occult and spiritual. Even my main thesis in University was too long for its expected level, but it passed anyway (perhaps because the contents was statifying?). But I guess that this becomes even more accentuated when I write in English, which is not the language that I was born with (i.e. Polish and soon Swedish). I believe that some of that lack of focus in my writing may be due to lingual idiosyncrasies. I ask my readers to apologize me for that, and I will try to better myself in the future.

Some of this we see in Stacewiczs’ [sic] embracing the Mathers AO 6=5 rather than critiquing it. To find any solid historical critique of Mathers’ work by Stacewiczs [sic] would be a rarity and none exists that I know of, and this indicates a blind acceptance – which is a no no in history. Any historian knows, the critique is a necessary part of one’s training and without it you would not get past the first term in history 101.
I repeat, I have no ambition to pass any terms in academia (I did my share of that already). What I am striving to do and struggling with full time (today) is to become is a fully accomplished initiate. I happen to be interested in the subject of occult history, mostly because the life of initiates and their fraternities fascinate me. But I will always write as an initiate (or from a initiated perspective), not as a academic historian. That is for others to do, not for me. What I find baroque is that post-modern initiates sacrifices their esoteric beliefs and world view on the altar of dry materialistic science. As an initiate I cannot accept the modern world view of the materialist, especially not in history. (I’m not a believer in the materialist dialectic doctrine of history; I write from the perspective of a traditionalist.) Thus, I am striving to see my world, both past, present and future, from the esoteric and spiritual perspective, that is, to regard life and existence as did the ancients.

Regarding the blind faith of MacGregor Mathers, that is simply not true. I believe one are able to find some critique of MacGregor Mathers also on my blog. As an example, I did mention in my last review of King over the Water that MacGregor Mather did do some bad choices and lost his contact with the Third Order on three occations. I probably would criticise him more if it wasnt for all the lies and speculations that are spread about him; as an initiate I feel the obligation to defend the reputation of a past Frater and Chief of my Order. In the current atmosphere on the blogosphere, I try to blance up the image of him. If I do make any critique of any past Frater or Soror, or initiate, I always try to be balanced. Like I have stated so many times before on this blog, it is below the true initiate to character assasinate a founding father of our Tradition in such a way as is done today by the counter-traditionalists. I dont care if that makes me a lesser scholar; I am a initiate foremost.

Lastly I want to address a comment that Tony Fuller, who is the actual source behind that A∴O∴ 6°=5° document which eventually became profaned, wrote on that same hate blog. I quote it here as it sheds some historical light on that document, for the benefit of my readers. He said the following:

I can shed some light on the claim regarding the “4” written on the 6=5 ritual. The original ritual (along with many other papers) actually came to me from Mrs Renn whose husband Charles went through this 6=5 ritual at Hermes Temple. From other notes of his it is abundantly clear that this is copy no 4 and NOT a reference to it being the “4th part”.
So, in the final analysis, it seems that I did an error in interpreting that large numer “4” on the frontispiece of the document. If Mr. Fuller is correct in his account, it means that it don’t make any reference to the published document being the “fourth” part of that ritual. But if it is a mark of the copy of that particular document, it still cannot refer it to any system of lending and general circulation as the fact still remains that it says on that same page with heavy underlining: “(Not to be copied)”. So what kind of copy is it then? Well, it could mean that it was the fourth ritual copy in use by a initiating team. This means that it had to be at least three more officers present. But in the published version, there are only two present. Where are the other two? Well, if we assume that there were other parts to that Ceremony, they most probably involved at least two more Officers that are not active during that last part.

Thus, Mr. Fuller’s statement doesn’t directly invalidate or disprove my original thesis that the published text was in fact the last part of a much longer ritual. On the contrary, as shown in my new analysis, it can even confirm that such a number presupposes it, regardless of it being a reference of a “fourth part” or a “fourth copy”. Mr. Fuller’s comment seems to confirm, however, one of my propositions (the one I designated as “(b)”), that the other parts had been lost at the time that Charles Renn was put through that ritual.


Addendum (2013-08-12--14) 

In the comments section the Golden Dawn historical scholar Tony Fuller shed some more light on the mysterious number 4 on the frontispiece of The Book of the Conference of Signs in the Grade of Adeptus Major (the actual title of the published part of the A∴O∴ 6°=5°). He said the following:
I agree that my comment does not rule out the possibility that the 6=5 ritual is part of a larger ritual. You are right that my comment is confined just to the fact that the number ‘4’ refers to ‘copy no.4’. To expand a little further on Carnegie Dickson’s practice. I have many of his papers, both AO and Cromlech. He was quite talented in producing attractive little booklets and he usually produced several for each ritual, paper etc. These are often individually marked as 1, 2, 3 etc. The 6=5 is entirely consistent with this, plus there is a comment elsewhere by Renn noting he had copy number 4. These were ‘authorized’ copies and Carnegie Dickson did not approve of any other copying.
So, even Mr. Fuller agrees with me that this little oddity doesnt rule out the possibilty (which in my opinion is most likely) that there are other parts attached to the original A∴O∴ 6°=5°. Judging my own copy it looks like The Book of the Conference of Signs was presented in its own booklet (although I cannot rule out the possibility that the copyist may have left out other portions of a larger text). This fact might corroborate the theory that the Hermes Temple No. 28 only possessed this part, although it doesnt necessarily mean that the other parts of the ritual werent organized as books bounded in their own booklets, which also may suggest that the original and full A∴O∴ 6°=5° constituted a very long ritual indeed. 

So in the final analysis, we cannot know for sure if there were other parts of the A∴O∴ 6°=5° in Carnegie Dicksons possession or not. Thus, as any good academic, we should suspend our judgements on the strictly scholarly level, if there ever had existed any more parts of the A∴O∴ 6°=5° or not, or if they had become lost in the process of transmission from their original creation or not; either they could have been lost somewhere after MacGregor Death, or when they changed hands from the original copyist of the published part (i.e. Carnegie Dickson) to the current holder of Carnegie Dicksons private collection, who eventually handed them over to that counter-traditional party who soon would issue it for publication. But the initiate in me, when reviewing the published part, knows for sure that there had to exist more parts than what the public has seen. (And I pray to God that this is all that the public will ever see of the 6°=5° ritual.) It all boils down to you gentle reader: It is your own choice to listen to the scholar or to the initiate in me.

Vad är Tradition?

DETTA BLOGGINLÄGGämnar att definiera vad som utmärker Tradition och är särskiljande för ett traditionalistiskt ordenssällskap inom Golden Dawn-traditionen. Med detta så menar jag att en traditionalistisk orden lägger stor vikt vid, värnar om och strävar efter att bevara Traditionen, vilket inte nödvändigtvis syftar på blott ”Golden Dawn” eller ”Gyllene Gryningens” tradition, vilket är en modern adaption av en långt mer ursprunglig Tradition, det som jag hänvisar till såsom Den Primordiala Traditionen. Gyllene Gryningens Tradition, eller det som i vardagligt tal kallas för Den Västerländska Mysterietraditionen, utgör en temporal eller tidslig tradition, dvs. en ändlig form av tradition som genomgår en ständig förändring och anpassar sig till rådande tider och kulturell kontext. I kontrast till detta utgör Den Primordiala Traditionen en evig och oföränderlig Tradition, vilket den tidsliga traditionen gör sitt bästa att förmedla i större eller mindre utsträckning. Den temporala traditionen utgör med andra ord en ”språkdräkt” som Den Primordiala Traditionen klär på sig för att uttrycka sig med i en viss kulturell samtid. Jag vågar påstå att den temporala tradition som bär det populära namnet ”Golden Dawn” eller ”Gyllene Gryning” utgör en av de mest optimala att förmedla Den Primordiala Traditionen, i dagens post-moderna kultur i allt större omfattning än någonsin tidigare. Detta förutsätter ehuru att Gyllene Gryningens Tradition representeras i ett så rent och oförstört skick som det är möjligt. I dagens post-moderna tider ser vi dock hur Golden Dawn-traditionen, på grund av ett århundrande av profanering i diverse litteratur, bli uppblandat med allehanda främmande moderna och post-moderna föreställningar och tillämpningar, såsom ”teosofi”, ”antroposofi”, ”thelema”, ”nyhedendom”, ”nyandlighet” och dylikt, ett faktum som allvarligt har försämrat förmågan hos Golden Dawn-traditionen att på ett fullgott sätt förmedla Den Primordiala Traditionen. En traditionalistisk Golden Dawn-organisation efterstävar att hålla Golden Dawn-traditionen så rent som det är möjligt från sådana nymodigheter och att söka återföra denna till Den Primordiala Traditionen i största möjliga omfattning.

I Golden Dawn-traditionen kan man se att Den Primordiala Traditionen mest av allt representeras av Den Tredje Orden, den innersta av alla nivåer av initiatoriska gradsystem, det som vissa författare kallar för ”inre skolan” eller ”det stora vita brödraskapet”, etc. Det är på denna högsta nivå av uppnående som den antika Hermetiska Traditionen lärs ut och
praktiseras mest optimalt. Den Andra eller Inre Orden, vilket relativt befinner sig strax under Den Tredje Orden i hierarkin, representerar framför allt den medeltida och i renässansen stöpta Rosenkorsiska Traditionen, en förmodern form av temporal tradition som står den Primordiala Traditionen i Tredje Orden allra närmast. En Första eller Yttre Orden, såsom Hermetiska Orden av Den Gryende Morgonrodnaden (H∴O∴G∴M+R), står den temporala samtiden allra närmast, vilket uttrycks i att en hel del moderna författare inom Golden Dawn-traditionen och besläktade traditioner studeras av våra studenter, majoriteten av dem verksamma mot slutet av 1800-talet och 1900-talets första hälft. Tanken är sålunda att den initierade gradvis skall göra en resa bakåt i tiden när denne avanceras i gradsystemet, från modern tid, genom renässans och medeltid, ända tillbaka till antiken och förantiken. Samtidigt med denna tidsresa i det förgångna erfar den initierade även en gradvis resa genom de västerländska andliga, religiösa och filosofiska traditionerna, vilket grovt sätt kan indelas i en hebreisk-rationell (Första Orden), kristen-gnostisk-nyplatonsk (Andra Orden) och hednisk-animistisk-hermetisk (Tredje Orden), dvs. från en ”monoteistisk” till en ”polyteistisk” föreställningsvärld. Den Primordiala Traditionen vilar sålunda på en hednisk, polyteistisk och animistisk grund ur vilket Den Hermetiska Traditionen har utvecklats. Denna klassiska hedendom har dock inget att göra med något ”nyhedniskt”.

Vidare dikterar Traditionen att endast Den Yttre eller Första Orden, samt Den Inre eller Andra Orden, kan och bör underställas en reformation, då däremot Den Innersta eller Tredje Orden aldrig får reformeras eftersom den representerar eviga idéer och symboler, det stilla nav runt vilket de övriga två Ordnarna skall röra sig i olika hastighet i förhållande till varandra, ett tempo som ökar ju längre ut i pereferin den initierade befinner sig. Det är sålunda Den Tredje Orden och dess ”hemliga ledare” som ger den kreativa impulsen till en reformation och förmedlar den esoteriska överföringen för detta, för Andra Ordens
reformatörer att orientera sig i. På samma sätt är Den Yttre Orden underställd Andra Ordens Ledare i ett strikt hierarkiskt förhållande. I synnerhet Den Yttre Orden är underställd regelbundna och ofta återkommande mindre reformationer, medan Den Inre Orden genomgår mer omfattande men desto mer sällsynta allmänna reformationer. Den Rosenkorsiska Traditionen påbjuder att brödraskapet skall genomgå en Allmän Reformation vart 111:e år. Den senaste Allmänna Reformationen inträffade år 1999. Exakt 111 år tidigare, 1888, utmynnade den dåvarande Allmänna reformationen i att Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn grundades i England. År 1777 reformerades Rosenkors-Orden i frimureriska former genom grundandet av Gold und Rosenkreutz Orden i Tyskland. Rosenkors-traditionen har sett sig bli reformerad år 1666, 1555, etc. Den Allmänna Reformationen avser i första hand Den Inre Orden, vilket även påverkar Den Yttre. Dock genomgår Den Yttre Orden upprepade Mindre Reformationer varje decennium, senast år 2010. Eftersom Hermetiska Orden av Den Gryende Morgonrodnadenär ett traditionalistiskt ordenssällskap så efterföljer den de påbud som följde på 1999 års Allmänna Reformation, vilket i grova drag innebär att mycket av den undervisning som reserverades för Inre Ordens Adepter efter år 1888 nu även tillkommer Yttre Ordens medlemmar. År 2010 genomförde det svenska Modertemplet en unik Mindre Reformation vilket anpassade undervisningen till Nordiska Förhållanden och som lade grunden för Hermetiska Orden av Den Gryende Morgonrodnaden.

Allt detta är dock underställt och beroende av Den Primordiala Traditionen, vilket utgör den stilla referenspunkten och röda tråden i allt reformationsarbete av båda allmän och mindre karaktär. Den Primordiala Traditionen, vilket även hänförs till såsom sophia perennis– Den Perenniella Traditionen eller Tidslösa Visdomen, kan i sin tur delas in i en Solar och en
Lunar Tradition. Den Solara Traditionen har sin upprinnelse i Solens flammande krafter, både i ett andligt och materiellt hänseende. Vår Sol och alla stjärnor i universum (myriaden av solar) bebos av solara väsen som består av ren solenergi, vilket också är ljus- och livsenergi. Temporala traditioner hänför till dem såsom ”gudar” och ”gudinnor” eller ”änglaväsen”. Sålunda utgör den Solara Traditionen en himmelsk andlighet av mer abstrakt karaktär, vilket har givit upphov till astrologin och den magiska tradition som är förknippad med detta, teurgin. Den Solara Traditionen är också maskulin och patriarkal till sin karaktär, bygger strukturer, regler och hierarkier. Man kan säga att religioner som en institutionell företelelse och teologin, men även filosofin och teosofin, utgör uttryck för Den Solara Traditionen, vilket kvantifierar och analyserar genom förnuft och logik. Den Lunara Traditionen å andra sidan är intuitiv och emotionell, och finner sin styrka i jorden (det terrestriala) som ett fundament och i Månen, vilket ju utgör en satellit till och står i nära samband med planeten Jorden, vilket har sin grund i den vulkaniska elden, den inre eller jordiska elden. Även jorden bebos av energetiska väsen som drar sin kraft från den vulkaniska energin. Temporala traditioner hänför till dem såsom ”andar” och ”naturväsen”. I fornnordiska tider kallade vi dem ”alver”, ”dvärgar” och ”troll”. De gamla grekerna kallade dem för ”daemoner” medan romarna kallade dem för ”genier”. Mellanösterns folk kallar den fortfarande för ”jinner” medan den judeo-kristna traditionen kallar dem för ”demoner”. De får sitt främsta uttryck i den animistiska tron vilket besjälar all materia med andeväsen. Sålunda har Den Lunara Traditionen sin grund i den schamanska andligheten, prototypen för alla senare religioner. Som en kulturell företeelse hos människan är Den Lunara Traditionen sålunda äldst i den temporala tidsaxeln och det är ur denna som grund Den Solara Traditionen utvecklar sig när den öppnar upp sig för de astrala influenserna. Den Lunara Traditionen är istället tellurgisk till sin natur och magisk till sitt uttryck, dvs. de magiska traditioner som är förknippade med Den Lunara Traditionen är främst av elementar art vilket ämnar att skapa förändringar i materian, taumaturgin. Den Lunara Traditionen är också feminin och matriarkal till sin karaktär, vilket skapar mellanmänskliga relationer av egalitär kvalitet som ej bygger på maktförhållanden, status eller uppnående.

Denna uppdelning och organisation av den stora världen (makrokosmos) har sin motsvarighet hos människan eller ”den lilla världen” (mikrokosmos). Även människan har en Solar Eld som verkar i de högsta och mest andliga regionerna, ofta förbundet med huvudet, som står i motsats till en ”vulkanisk eld” gömd och fördold i roten av hennes ryggrad eller svanskotan, det som vanligtvis kallas för den eldiga ormkraften. Mycket av det som vi kallar för Det Stora Verket – Opus Magnum– handlar om att väcka denna jordiska eld inom oss till liv och att leda denna längs vår ryggrad så att den kan möta den himmelska kraften i vår hjässa eller krona, för att skapa ett alkemiskt bröllop. Även om vi som människor står närmare kroppen och de tellurgiska krafterna inneboende i jorden, vilket
även uttrycks i vårt kroppsmedvetande och våra neurologiska processer, så bär vi inom oss fröet och potentialen till en själ, vår inre Sol. Det Stora Verket handlar om att vi medels specifika metoder skall väcka till liv eller aktivera olika nivåer inom oss som transcenderar vår fysiska kropp, de s.k. ”subtila kropparna”. Den som ligger oss närmast är vår Lunara Kropp och den mest exalterade av dem alla är vår Solara Kropp. Gradvis genom de initiationer som vi förmedlar i Hermetiska Orden av Den Gryende Morgonrodnaden, kombinerat med de magiska och alkemiska tekniker som vi lär ut, utvecklar vi kropparna led efter led. Målet är att till fullo väcka liv i vår Solara Kropp, vilket är en förutsättning till en medveten odödlighet. Det är först då som ”kvicksilvret kan fixeras” och själen ej genomgår ”den andra döden” efter den fysiska kroppens död och upplöses och endast vår gudsgnista kvarstår. Det Stora Verker syftar sålunda till att kultivera vår gudsgnista och därigenom aktivera Den Solara Kroppen och Det Solara Medvetandet så att vi kan överleva den fysiska döden som medvetna väsen, uppgående i den solara dimensionen. Därigenom gör vi oss till mer än människor och har umgänge med de solara väsen som har sin tillvaro i den solara dimensionen; människan blir nu en av gudarna, en av de odödliga.

Det är för att bistå mänskligheten i hennes Verk som de solara väsendena har stigit ner från sin solara dimension och färdats från Solen till vår Jord för att undervisa den primitiva urtidsmänniskan, som blott har haft kännedom om Den Primordiala Traditionen genom dess Lunara aspekt. Sålunda har människan, som tidigare endast har blivit väglädd av de tellurgiska entiteterna i framväxten av en mänsklig kultur och andlig animistisk tradition, blivit guidad av de solara väsendena att grunda komplexa samhällen och civilisationer, och parallellt med detta en Solar esoterisk tradition genom personlig initiation och exoterisk religion förmedlat av ett prästerskap. För att kunna överbrygga språnget från en Lunar till
en Solar Tradition har dessa Solara Mästare givit mänskligheten alkemin, den konungsliga konsten eller ars regia, vilket utgör en syntes mellan en animistisk världssyn och en astrologisk, föreningen mellan materia och ande, jord och himmel. Det är också alkemin som utgör den ursprungliga impulsen till all senare materiell vetenskap och forskning. Detta skedde i historien för första gången i Mesopotamien, den plats där de första civilisationerna uppstod. Det var också här som den kaldeiska temporala traditionen uppstod, genom en fusion av en tidigare Lunar och animistisk tradition som vandrade från Europa och förenade sig med den nya uppkomna Solara himmelska traditionen, vilket utgjorde prototypen för alla senare esoteriska traditioner, som praktiserade de tre stora vetenskaperna och konsterna – magi, alkemi och astrologi. Den kaldeiska traditionen överfördes snart till Egyptien där Den Hermetiska Traditionen uppstod som en temporal tradition i ett nästa led, på samma sätt uppdelat i tre delar senare hänvisat till såsom trivium hermeticum eller ”den hermetiska trefaldigheten”. Så småningom mötte Den Hermetiska och egyptiska Traditionen de tellurgiska och månbaserade traditioner som var verksamma i antikens Grekland och Rom, vilket ytterligare utvecklade Den Hermetiska Traditionen och gav upphov till de grekiska och romerska mysteriespelen i ett senare led, såsom de dionysiska och eleusinska. Sedan dess grundande i förantikens Kaldéen har ett och samma brödraskap av initierade förvaltat Traditionen och varit dess bärare, vilket vi idag kallar Den Tredje Orden, vars Mästare har spridit den vidare och i olika sammanhang utgjort impulsen att skapa olika temporala och yttre traditioner, verkandes så att säga bakom kulisserna. Alla autentiska esoteriska traditioner som praktiserar trivium hermeticum har på ett eller annat sätt fått sin inspiration och vägledning från Tredje Ordens, det hermetiska kollegiets Hemliga Ledare och Osynliga Mästare. En av dessa, som uppkom under renässansen, är Rosenkors-traditionen. Det har varje gång varit på dessa Hemliga Ledares initiativ som Rosenkors-traditionen har reformerats vart 111:e år enligt den fastställda cykeln, senast alltså i vår egen post-modern tid år 1999. Ett sant traditionalistisk ordenssällskap representerar ett uttryck för denna eviga och cykliska rörelse.

Aurora Nascente in Hyperborea

ETT INTRESSANT astronomiskt fenomen sker just nu som har signifikans för oss nordbor. Solen, vårt solsystems hjärta, har liksom alla hjärtan en egen hjärtrytm. Det slår med ett slag vart 11:e år. Vetenskapsmännen, vilket har observerat detta fenomen sedan Galileos dagar, kallar detta fenomen för den solara cykeln. När Det Stora Hjärtat slår så vänder dess poler polaritet, byter plats så att säga, vilket skapar våldsamma solstormar. Parallellt med detta verkar norrskenen vara som allra mest aktiva vart 11:e år, sammanfallande med vårt solara hjärtas rytm. Forskare ser naturligtvis ett samband mellan dessa fenomen och denna solcykel ty ett norrsken är intet annat än solstormar vars efterföljande solvindar träffar jordens atmosfär och orsakar detta fenomen när elektronerna möter atmosfären.

Solens hjärtslag
Norrskenet har givits det latinska namnet Aurora borealis, eller helt enkelt Aurora, döpt efter den romerska morgonrodnadens gudinnan med samma namn. Den Rosenkorsiska traditionen lägger mycket vikt vid den reformativa principen, vars namn myntades av den stora tyske Rosenkorsiske filosofen Jakob Böhme när han skrev sitt första verk år 1612 med den tyska titeln Morgenröte im Aufgang, vilket på latin kallades Aurora nascente eller Aurora consurgens. Denna titel kan översättas till svenskan som ”Den Gryende Morgonrodnaden. Två år senare publicerade det Rosenkorsiska brödraskapet sitt första manifest med titeln Fama Fraternitatis, vilket mot slutet statuerar följande:
Vi vet dock att det enligt vår åstundan och andras förväntningar efter någon tid kommer en allmän reformation av både gudomliga och mänskliga ting. Ty innan solen går upp, upplyses himlen av MORGONRODNADENS LJUS. I väntan på denna reformation församlas några få som med sitt antal skall utöka vårt brödraskap, höja dess anseende och stärka dess förhoppningar och ge de av Fr.R.C. (Christian Rosenkreutz) föreskrivna Filosofiska Canons en lycklig begynnelse. I all ödmjukhet och kärlek skall dessa nytillkomna tillsammans med oss dela våra skatter, som aldrig skall förgås, och så lindra denna världens möda och inte längre vandra ovetande om kunskapen om Guds underbara verk. Intressant att nämna i detta sammanhang är att den Rosenkorsiska traditionen påbjuder en allmän reformationscykel om 111 år, vilket bryts ner i mindre reformationer om ett decennium. Detta verkar överensstämma ganska så väl med Solens hjärtrytm om 11 år. Faktum är att denna Orden i sin svenska tappning, vilket numera kallar sig Hermetiska Orden av Den Gryende Morgonrodnaden, nyligen har genomfört en dylik mindre decenniell reformation. Årskiftet 2013-14 utgör en tid då vårt solara hjärta slår sitt slag igen och Aurora borealis uppenbarar sig igen som starkast, förebående en Nordisk Gryende Morgonrodnad – Aurora Nascente in Hyperborea!

Vad är Mottradition?

DETTA BLOGGINLÄGG, vilket följer upp ämnet Tradition som togs upp i ett tidigare inlägg, ämnar att definiera vad som utmärker en Mottradition (i kontrast till Tradition) och presentera typiska karaktäristika för denna inom Golden Dawn-samhället. En stor skillnad mellan en traditionalistiskt världsåskådning och den som vanligtvis hålls i det moderna och post-moderna sinnet är föreställningen om evolution. I vår egen samtid så betingas människan att tro på föreställningen om att allting utvecklas och evolverar från något lägre till det högre, från något sämre till det bättre, längst en linjär tidsskala. Den Traditionella synen på ”utveckling” och ”progression” lägger dock till en ytterligare dimension, nämligen den om devolution och degradering. Traditionen hävdar att allt istället rör sig i cykler, vilket kan analyseras utifrån en sinuskurva eller svängningsrörelse som gradvis ökar i frekvens. Sålunda genomgår all utveckling faser av tillväxt och nedgång, evolution och devolution, förädling och degenerering; det är en naturlig växling som alla andra former av cykliska rörelser i naturen och kulturen, såsom ebb och flod, mörker och ljus, natt och dag, kärlek och hat, krig och fred. Sålunda rör sig all utveckling i cykler av uppgång och fall, tills cirkeln har slutits och påbörjar en ny uppgång vilket övergår till ett nytt fall, osv. Grovt räknat kan man anse att den mänskliga kulturen föddes i och med Den Lunara Traditionens födelse och uppkomsten av grupp- och stamsamhället, vilket så att säga inledde denna kulturella cykliska rörelse. Denna kultur och tradition evolverade tills den nådde sitt klimax i och med Den Solara Traditionens manifestation i människans samhälle och grundandet av de första civilisationerna (vilket historien placerar allt längre tillbaka i tiden). Myten om Atlantis vittnar om den Traditionella synen att där en gång i förantiken grundades en första primordial civilisation, med bistånd av de solara väsendena. Ur denna utvecklades så småningom de klassiska civilisationerna i Mesopotamien, Egypten och Grekland. Denna period har kommit att kallas för ”Guldåldern” i den mänskliga civilisationen, vilket i den vediska traditionen har sin motsvarighet i satya yuga som motsvarar den tid då människan var i umgängelse med de solara väsendena, med gudarna. Därefter har civilisationen gradvis devolverat och degraderats i tre efterföljande epoker, faser eller tidsåldrar: Silveråldern (treta yuga), Kopparåldern (dvapara yuga) och sist till Järnåldern (kali yuga). Vår egen tid motsvaras av Järnåldern, vilket sammanfaller med modernitetens tidevarv som inleddes under 1700-talets upplysningstid och som nu har övergått i post-moderniteten.

Kulturens gradvisa fall leder också till uppkomsten av en mottradition, vilket i synnerhet har blivit förhärskande i kölvattnet på moderniteten. Även om det har funnits kulturella motreaktioner mot upplysningsrörelsen, i och med den tyska romantiska rörelsen, så har även denna varit ett barn av moderniteten, då man i en desperat kamp för att rädda myternas giltighet har internaliserat gudarna till att vara blott själsliga uttryck inuti människan, vilket har fört bort den esoteriska och ockulta traditionen från sina primordiala rötter. Denna trend har fortfarit under den ockulta renässansen mot slutet av 1800-talet, vilket i synnerhet var förhärskande i Frankrike och Storbrittanien; Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn var en viktig faktor i denna anglosaxiska renässans och romantiska tolkning av de ockulta konsterna, även om sällskapet förvisso var grundat i Den Primordiala Traditionen såsom varande sanktionerat av Den Tredje Orden. Samtidigt så har detta ökade fokus på människans psyke och subjektiva erfarenhet fört något gott med sig som är värt att bevara. Romantikens perspektiv på mysterierna har sin definitiva plats i Den Yttre Orden, i kontrast till Den Inre Orden, för att gradvis avvänja det moderna och post-moderna sinnet från materialistisk betingning, att successivt leda bort det från den positivistiska objektivismen till en idealistisk subjektivism. Men en ensidig betoning på intrapsykiska processer leder samtidigt till ett utarmande av Traditionen, något vi allt mer har sett tendenser till under sen-moderniteten och i synnerhet under post-moderniteten och vågen av ”nyandlighet” och ”nyhedendom”. Den ensamt viktigaste inspirationskällan för denna moderna västerländska nyockultistiska rörelse var Teosofiska Samfundet, grundat av Helena Petrovna Blavatsky. Denna rörelse tog sig an den österländska esoteriska traditionen utifrån ett modernt västerländskt perspektiv och i processen så misstolkade den många österländska begrepp som är självklara idag, såsom läran om reinkarnation och karma vilket har fått utstå en simplistisk uttolkning och utarmning. Teosofin har varit den drivande kraften att införa ett modernt västerländskt ”positivistiskt” vetenskapligt perspektiv på mysterierna, vilket har lett till många omtolkningar av traditionella föreställningar och som har fört den temporala traditionen allt mer ifrån Den Primordiala Traditionen. Den postmoderna världen har sett födelsen av en i huvudsak amerikaniserad nyandlighet (New Age) och i kölvattnet på denna har nyhedendomen (Neopaganism) uppkommit. Detta har lett till en allvarlig utarmning av Den Västerländska Esoteriska Traditionen, såväl som Den Österländska, vilket har utvecklad en sorts kommersialiserad ”snabbmats”-variant på andlighet; man har tagit gamla antika och medeltida föreställningar och traditioner och packeterat om dem till en lättsmält version, som om det vore vilket kommersiell produkt som helst. Tyvärr har vi sett liknande tendenser också inom Golden Dawn-samhället.

De mottraditionella tendenserna i det post-moderna Golden Dawn-samhället är flerfaldiga. Traditionen har kommersialiserats ganska så hårt, delvis genom publikationen av allehanda ”Golden Dawn-litteratur”; i snitt släpps en handfull engelska titlar varje år som mer eller mindre relaterar till Golden Dawn-traditionen. Detta har skett i samma omfattning sedan 1990-talet, men den regelbundna utgivningen av Golden Dawn-litteratur inleddes år 1969 då Israel Regardies The Golden Dawn släpptes i en första nyutgåva. (Denna titel har nu släppts i sammanlagt 6 utgåvor och ännu fler omtryckningar.) Golden Dawn-traditionen fick ett stort genomslag i offentligheten i synnerhet efter Regardies sista bok (vilket i princip var en ny version av The Golden Dawn) med titeln The Complete Golden Dawn System of Magic som gavs ut år 1984, bara ett år innan hans död. Detta innebär att Golden Dawn-traditionen är en av de mest profanerade autentiska esoteriska traditioner som finns; endast en obefintlig mängd av Ordens ursprungliga dokumentsamling är outgiven. I de flesta fall har materialet blivit profanerat av tidigare initierade i Golden Dawn-traditionen, såsom Israel Regardie. Denna profanering i sig går helt emot Traditionens råmärken. Vad värre är att dessa författare strävar efter att kapitalisera på Golden Dawn-traditionen, göra den till en produkt som kan köpas av alla och envar, vilket den ursprungligen inte var avsedd för. Många s.k. ”adepter” av Golden Dawn-traditionen har gjort sig ett stort namn och en karriär på sin bokproduktion. Vissa av dem säljer dessutom kostsamma korrespondenskurser till sina läsare. Vidare har några namnstarka ordenssällskap inom Golden Dawn-samhället som brukar sig av namnet ”Golden Dawn” försökt att sälja den som vilket produkt som helst över Internet, inklusive vulgära slogans, som om de vore vilken on-line butik som helst. Med en enkel knapptryckning och betalning genom PayPal kan man idag bli medlem i Orden, utan någon som helst prövning eller bedömning om man ens är lämplig och av ”det rätta virket”. Vissa av dem erbjuder s.k. ”astrala initiationer”, ”själv-invigningar” eller andra dubiösa och fullständigt otraditionella tillämpningar som genvägar till verklig initiation; man kan idag bli en ”initierad” utan att behöva se insidan av ett Tempel. Namnet ”Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn” och ”The Golden Dawn” har dessutom blivit upphovsrättsprövat av ett par intressenter, vilket vittnar om att namnet i sig är ett varumärke med stort kapitalvärde; för närvarande äger två konkurrerande intressenter namnet. Vidare saluförs allehanda produkter inom Golden Dawn-traditionenöver hela Internet, såsom CD-skivor, DVD-skivor, tröjor, jackor, muggar, men även magiska redskap av allehanda slag, rituella dräkter och rekvisita. Det finns resande föreläsare och instruktörer som undervisar om Golden Dawn-traditionen i en lättsmält förpackning runt om i Västvärlden, i formen av workshops över en weekend. Vissa av dem håller även i lektioner on-line för en kostnad. På YouTube kan man titta på reklamfilmer som försöker värva medlemmar i olika Golden Dawn-baserade grupper, eller av grupper som påstår sig vara ”det enda och sanna Golden Dawn. Sammanfattningsvist har man omdefinerat studenterna av Golden Dawn-traditionen till att bli konsumenter och omvandlat Golden Dawn-samhället till en andlig marknad, enligt tidstypiskt New Age-snitt. Girigheten verkar vara den starkaste drivkraften hos många av dessa organisationer. Allt detta är exempel på vulgära uttryck för en mottradition.

En annan aspekt av mottradition inom det postmoderna Golden Dawn-samhället är viljan att tolka och förklara Golden Dawn-traditionen i termer av moderna vetenskapliga teorier, exempelvis kvantfysik och psykoanalys, samt att anamma ett modernt och upplysningsfilosofiskt empiriskt förhållningssätt i sin andliga praktik. En tidig pionjär i att föra in moderna vetenskapliga idéer i Golden Dawn-traditionen var Aleister Crowley, en initierad i Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn. Han myntade mottot: ”Vetenskaplig metod – Religionens mål”. Hans lärjunge och personlige sekreterare Israel Regardie utvecklade detta vidare efter att han hade blivit initierad i avläggaren Stella Matutina. Det var han som först började föra in psykoanalytiska idéer till Golden Dawn-traditionen, främst från Sigmund Freud, Carl Gustav Jung och Wilhelm Reich. Post-moderna initierade och studenter av Golden Dawn-traditionen, som i majoriteten av fallen står i djup tacksamhetsskuld till både Crowley och Regardie genom deras publikationer, har anammat detta vetenskapliga förhållningssätt på de ockulta konsterna. I detta sammanhang är det väl värt att erinra sig att Crowley var den förste initierade som bröt mot sin tystnadsförpliktelse och profanerade delar av Ordens tradition genom bokpublikation, en trend som Regardie fulländade. Dock kan ingen av dem, i rättvisans namn, jämföras med dagens namnstarka och produktiva Golden Dawn-författare avseende kommersialiseringen och exploateringen av Golden Dawn-traditionen. Psykoanalys i all ära (varandes ett barn av romantiken och faktiskt utgjörande en viktig motvikt till den naturvetenskapliga logiska positivismen under tidigt 1900-tal) men en ensidig psykologisering av magiska upplevelser och av traditionell symbolik är inget annat än en utarmning och reducering av vad Traditionen ursprungligen avsåg. Av alla psykologiska skolor presenterar psykoanalysen den mest intressanta moderna metoden till att ernå högre grad av självkännedom, men endast som ett komplement, inte alternativ till den Traditionella synen på själsliga processer och på universums natur. För att verkligen kunna förstå Golden Dawn-traditionen och alla andra autentiska temporala traditioner måste den initierade åtminstone temporärt kunna lämna sin invanda post-moderna föreställningsvärld och försätta sig i ett tillstånd där denne kan leva sig in i hur antikens och medeltidens människor tänkte, kände och upplevde sin tillvaro, ty dessa traditioner har sin grund i deras världsåskådning. Exempelvis hyser den postmoderne studenten en helt felaktig syn på vad ”Den Helige Skyddsängeln” är för något, tack vare Regardie, vilket är synd och skam med tanke på hur fundamental denna förståelse är för att kunna lyckas i sitt andliga uppsåt.

En ännu farligare degradering av Golden Dawn-traditionenär de friheter som vissa ledare i Golden Dawn-samhället tar sig med Traditionen när de utvecklar undervisningen bortom det som har publicerats i litteraturen. Inte sällan ser man exempel på typiska nyandliga inslag i vissa ockulta tillämpningar, såsom guidade meditationer presenterade som de mest avancerade av Inre Ordens-tekniker! Guidade meditationer kan förvisso ha sitt andliga syfte men blott på en nivå i träningen som på sin höjd motsvarar Den Yttre Orden, vilket ju skall vara den nivå i Orden som är mest anpasslig efter samtida strömningar och behov. En annan barock föreställning är att ”självinvigning” skulle vara ett fullgott alternativ till verklig initiering i ett Tempel; den post-moderna människan har helt missat målet när den har gjort ”den andre” till överflödig. Endast någon som inte är förankrad i Traditionen kan undgå att förstå att initiatorn är en essentiell komponent i att överföra energier och väcka motsvarande i initianden – detta ”jäst” är avgörande för den initiatoriska processen. Likaledes är föreställningen om den ”astrala initiationens” förträfflighet grundad i en avsaknad förståelse för traditionella insikter om initiation, vilket alltid kräver kroppens närvaro som fysisk bas att förankra den emottagna energin; den är inget annat än en bluff för att kunna attrahera så många medlemmar som möjligt över Internet. Vidare gör post-moderna studenter av Golden Dawn-traditionen narr av härkomst eller härstamning tillbaka till det ursprungliga Modertemplet Isis-Urania Nr. 3, eller till tidigare Rosenkorsiska ordenssällskap, föreställningar som även hyses av ett flertal post-moderna ordensledare. Detta är en naturlig konsekvens av traditionens profanering; eftersom hela Golden Dawn-traditionen utgör ”offentlig handling” så är det upp till vem som helst att grunda ett Tempel. Dessutom tror post-moderna studenter av Golden Dawn-traditionen och dess ledare att William Wynn Westcott och Samual Liddell MacGregor Mathers själva konstruerade Golden Dawn-traditionen utifrån sina privata studier av befintliga traditioner, att där aldrig har existerat något autentiskt Rosenkorsiskt brödraskap eller ännu mindre att de skulle ha varit initierade i ett sådant. I motsats till denna post-moderna liberala föreställning om härkomst och auktorisation dikterar Traditionen att endast en initierad av Adeptus Exemptus 7°=4° Grad är kvalificerad att grunda ett Tempel och administrera en Andra Orden. Än värre är att föreställningen om Traditionens uppkomst och existensen av en verklig och urtida Tredje Orden avvisas av majoriteten av initierade, inklusive ledarna för Golden Dawn-baserade ordenssällskap. Detta innebär att de till skillnad från Ordens ursprungliga grundare, såsom S. L. MacGregor Mathers, utvecklar de högre gradernas undervisning i Andra Orden, och i förkommande fall även i Tredje Orden, utan någon vägledning av De Hemliga Ledarna. Istället använder de sin begränsade förståelse för den kanoniska Golden Dawn-traditionen (dvs. ursprunglig och profanerad ordensdokumentation) när de försöker att skapa en logisk progression i undervisningen, genom extrapolation av det befintliga materialet. Idag har Golden Dawn-traditionen blivit till en ”open source” för var och en att manipulera efter eget huvud. Detta innebär i praktiken att de inte lyckas göra något annat än att rekonstruera Traditionen; undantaget till denna regel kräver en god portion verkligt geni och en god portion tur, vilket ger för dåliga odds för att lyckas. Alla ockulta metoder och teorier i Första och Andra Orden av Golden Dawn-traditionenär baserade på och utgör yttre tillämpningar av inre motsvarigheter hos Tredje Orden. För att verkligen förstå och till fullo öppna upp dessa ”yttre” magiska och alkemiska formler, vilket hänförs till såsom lunara mysterier (i egenskap av sin återspeglande funktion), behöver den initierade ha tillgång till de ”inre” teknikerna och den förståelse som följer på detta – de solara mysterierna. Vad som då skapas, om man saknar dessa nycklar till Golden Dawn-traditionen, är en själslös och substanslös temporal tradition – en verklig mottradition.

Allt detta har sin grund i Teosofiska Samfundets omtolkning av de urtida mysterierna och dess utspridning till massorna i en utarmad och moderniserad form. Med detta sagt hade H. P. Blavatsky delvis en grund som bottnade i Den Primordiala Traditionen, vilket tydligast exemplifieras av Teosofins vilja att göra komparativa studier av de västerländska och österländska mysterierna och se sambanden mellan dem. Blavatskys tidiga fas i sina esoteriska studier ägnades åt Den Västerländska Esoteriska Traditionen och denna Teosofi hade sin grund i romantiken, utgörande en viktig faktor i hela den europeiska ockulta renässansen. Hennes senare fas kännetecknas dock av ett huvudsakligt intresse för de österländska traditionerna, något som färgades av hennes moderna västerländska sinne. Detta togs över av hennes efterträdare Anne Besant, Alice Bailey och Charles Webster Leadbeater, vilket tog moderniseringen till absurda ytterligheter och lade grunden för den post-moderna nyandliga (New Age-) rörelsen. Teosofen Rudolf Steiner tog avstånd från detta ensidiga fokus på österlandet och lät sin Antroposofi behålla den ursprungliga västerländska emfasen, dock färgat av moderniteten. Golden Dawn-traditionen tog starka intryck av både den senare Teosofin och Antroposofin genom Stella Matutina, en tidig avläggare till Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, vilket har lagt grunden för det post-moderna Golden Dawn-samhället genom Israel Regardies publikationer vilket ju i huvudsak är baserade på Stella Matutinas material. Sålunda kan man anse Israel Regardie vara fadern till den post-moderna Golden Dawn-traditionen. S. L. MacGregor Mathers legitima kontinuitet av Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, Rosicrucian Order of Alpha Omega, höll sig relativt fritt från dylika teosofiska och antroposofiska influenser, fast förankrat i Traditionen. Idag är Golden Dawn-samhället splittrat i två huvudsakliga falanger, dem som spårar sin härkomst till Stella Matutina (den stora majoriteten av post-moderna sällskap) och dem som hävdar härkomst från Rosicrucian Order of Alpha Omega (en minoritet av traditionella brödraskap). Hermetiska Orden av Den Gryende Morgonrodnaden erkänner sin härkomst från båda dessa historiska ordenssällskap men identifierar sig huvudsakligen med MacGregor Mathers’ Alpha Omega och arbetar med dess ceremonier som grund sedan Den Allmäna Reformationen år 1999, i egenskap av att vara en uttalad traditionalistisk Orden.

Sammanfattningsvis är allt detta ett uttryck för Järnålderns materialistiska grepp om den post-moderna människan, en mottradition som tyvärr har infekterat dagens Golden Dawn-samhälle och skapat denna djupa splittring. Det är således ett uttryck för naturliga processer sett utifrån ett kulturellt och historiskt perspektiv. Det finns dock ett talesätt som säger att natten är som mörkast strax innan gryningen. Traditionen lär ut att när den kulturella cykeln har nått sin absoluta botten så kommer sinuskurvan att vända igen, Järnåldern kommer att övergå i en ny Kopparålder, vilket på sikt kommer att leda till en ny Silverålder, förebådande en ny Guldålder då människan återigen skall vandra i umgängelse med gudarna. Dock verkar det som att tiden för varje tidsålder kommer att krympa vid den uppgående trenden, att varje cykel kommer att bli allt kortare. Mänskligheten kommer således inte behöva vänta i över 2000 år för att kunna erfara en ny kulturell högtid igen. Hur mycket längre till vi måste bevittna hur samhället omkring oss faller i ett andligt perspektiv innan vändningen kommer är svårt att sia om; att vi har inte nått botten än är nog sannolikt. Men att mänskligheten redan är på väg att förbereda sig för en dylik vändning är omisskännlig, vilket det allt mer ökade intresset för mysterierna vittnar om. Att ordenssällskapen blir blir allt större är inte blott ett uttryck för kommersialism, utan vittnar också om att mänskligheten som sådan börjat mogna och inse vilka de sant mänskliga värdena är. Astrologin vittnar också den om en annalkande ”vattumannens tidsålder”, vilket bekräftar denna tes. I dessa oroliga tider står det dock som allt klarare, att det är av yttersta vikt att orientera sig utifrån Traditionen som ett andligt kompass. I detta sammanhang utgör verklig initiation ett veritabelt och sunt alternativ till mottraditionens och motinitiationens destruktiva influenser. Vi väljer härmed att avsluta med några väl valda ord tagna från det första Rosenkorsiska manifestet:
Vi vet dock att det enligt vår åstundan och andras förväntningar efter någon tid kommer en allmän reformation av både gudomliga och mänskliga ting. Ty innan solen går upp, upplyses himlen av MORGONRODNADENS LJUS. I väntan på denna reformation församlas några få som med sitt antal skall utöka vårt brödraskap, höja dess anseende och stärka dess förhoppningar och ge de av Fr.R.C. (Christian Rosenkreutz) föreskrivna Filosofiska Canons en lycklig begynnelse. I all ödmjukhet och kärlek skall dessa nytillkomna tillsammans med oss dela våra skatter, som aldrig skall förgås, och så lindra denna världens möda och inte längre vandra ovetande om kunskapen om Guds underbara verk. I confirm that I have resigned from the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn / Alpha et Omega

FOUR DAYS AGO, on Winter Solstice, I declared that I have left the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, the Outer Order of the Rosicrucian Order of Alpha et Omega® (H.O.G.D./A+O). The fact is that I left the H.O.G.D./A+O already a fortnight ago but decided to wait with the official declaration until the December 21st as I wanted all of the interested parties and my own students a chance to know about and react to it beforehand. I wasn’t sure that I would make any declaration on the Gyllene Gryningen Blog until the next Vernal Equinox, but as the reaction on the blogosphere was swift following my Facebook declaration, I have finally decided to break my silence on the blogosphere as well, on this Dies Natalis Solis Invicti, Yule or Christmas Day. What better day to make such a declaration that on the birthday of the Sun? These are the times optimal in which seeds should be planted to bear fruit in the Spring.

As I said, the news have already spread over at the blogosphere in two instances, one positive and one not so positive, or at least sceptic or perhaps cautiously favorable. However, in that sceptical last instance (which I won’t link to as it is a source of worst kind of gossip and mischievious rumours) my resignation has been turned into a schism. I feel obliged to my gentle readers to correct this misrepresentation about my departure. It is not a schism. There is a mutual recognition between the H.O.G.D./A+O and myself, and whatever I plan to do or organize regarding the furtherment of the Tradition. To schism would be a violation to my own principles. On the contrary, I have my former Chief’s blessing in leaving the H.O.G.D./A+O and to continue the work independently on my own. In the comments section on one of my latest postings David Griffin wrote the following:
It is a great pleasure to welcome yet another traditional order in the greater Golden Dawn community. This is actually quite important, considering how post-modernists repeatedly attempt to misportray their faction as the entire Golden Dawn community, as though no traditional GD orders exist at all!
Not that I consider myself necessarily to be part of the “greater Golden Dawn Community”, nor that Mr. Griffin’s recognition is vital or fundamentally essential for my continuing work, even though I do welcome it, but it is significant nonetheless in our present discussion; if I had actually schismed from the H.O.G.D./A+O as has been suggested, would he have given me such a blessing? Hardly. And now that Mr. Griffin has welcomed “yet another traditional order in the greater Golden Dawn community”, I also feel obliged to confirm that my old Temple, which was authorized by the H.O.G.D./A+O already in 1997, will continue with the work in administrating legitimate Hermetic initiation in a traditional manner, but totally independent and fully autonomous, and quite separate from the Golden Dawn Community. At this present state of things, seeds have been carefully selected and planted into the dark and fertile hyperborean soil which will blossom in full in Spring. A “new” Order is being created as I speak, with the old Swedish Mother Temple as its nucleus, which at the same time is a direct continuation of what was already created in Sweden two decades ago. You, my gentle reader, have to wait until Spring Equinox for more news regarding this coming deliverance. Right now it has to grow safely protected in silence and mystery in a state of pregnancy.

My reasons for leaving the H.O.G.D./A+O are several, but generally strictly personal and not of the general interest of the public. One of the reasons that I choose to share with you regarding why I left the H.O.G.D./A+O is that I have grown weary of the international focus of the Order, something that I have never been comfortable with; now I will be able to focus entirely on Scandinavia and my native Hyperboreans. During the last years the Scandinavian Jurisdiction has grown separate from the International Parent Organization, both in form (pedagogy) and contents (teaching); we have developed a unique character so the process of
hiving off has been unavoidable. But I must make this clear for all you gentle readers, regardless if you are a member of the H.O.G.D./A+O or not: I still love the H.O.G.D./A+O and feel sincere and deep gratitude for my 18 years in it. This Order has been my nursery, elementary school and university, and I wouldn’t be the man that I am today without it. But it’s time for me to part from it and finally move on. This is a natural thing and nothing to be worried or alarmed about. One thing is for sure, and that is that I will still remain within the Hermetic Tradition in general and in the Golden Dawn Tradition in particular, and I believe that my previous devotion to it will benefit from the parting and independence.

Why the name “Golden Dawn” has lost its original meaning

IN A WAY, this blog entry represents my final accounts on the Golden Dawn. It has been a long process of writing it. The last and fifth part I wrote originally more than two years ago on Facebook. I have amended and expanded upon it when composing this blog. The other four parts I wrote three weeks ago, but I hesitated to post it and was advised not to by my Soror Mystica because of the controversial nature of the contents. Following that I decided not to publish it but didnt delete it. Since then I have had time to work with the text to present the message in a form which hopefully wont upset to many people. But I feel that it is important for me to speak candidly and without to much restraint, as it summarises my point of view on the current state of the Golden Dawn Community” and where I stand in relation to it. It will also place my latest and future writing on the Gyllene Gryningen Blog in a context which will make it more understandable for the gentle reader. My words are my own, not that of any Order or organization that I happen to represent (although it supports the essence of the wordings). Thus, what I write is quite personal, also being aware that I am not without sin. However, on this day (New Years Eve of 2013) I resign from my membership of the Golden Dawn Community (if I ever was part of it in the first place), in an effort to reject all of the destructive tendencies associated with it.

Now, some of you of my gentle readers who are following the blogosphere will perhaps notice the similarities between what follows and a blog posted 11 days ago by Nick Farrell. However similar the themes might be between our posts my position and rationale to leave the Golden Dawn Communty is diametrically opposite to that of Mr. Farrells. How I interpret him, he has left the Golden Dawn because he wants to distance himself from the Golden Dawn Tradition and the old Golden Dawn Egregore, which he finds to much old-school; I on the other hand am distancing myself from the post-modernist Golden Dawn Communtiy” because it has left its roots and the Tradition, and turned itself into something that I dont feel is where I actually belong - whatever that community actually is or is representing, it surely isnt what I call home. Although I agree with Mr. Farrell in my third and fourth parts, non of his main reasons resonates with mine. Thus, the following blog is not a response to anything that he might had suggested. At best, Mr. Farrells post has inspired me to take the courage to finally release this text. As I said earlier, I wrote most of this blog already three weeks ago and the last part over two years ago; those of you wo are my Facebook friends may confirm this, and if you are one of my 50+ followers, you will know that I wrote the better part of this text exactly three weeks ago as I inadvertedly published it in writing. I suppose we are going through changes right now which may be related to certain astronomical phenomena; there is lots of synchronicity going on, which might explain any similarities, lots of letting go (of old relationships). 

What follows is a presentation of my arguments why the name Golden Dawn no longer applies to what I personally stand for; these are the reasons why I no longer consider my self as a Golden Dawner or a member of any community composed of such individuals. The English words Golden and Dawn put together, although beautiful in themselves, have lost their true and original meaning; they dont any longer represent what they were supposed to symbolize when they once were coined. I wont mention any names or refer to any one particular organization; if you are feeling struck or guilty by my words, that I somehow specifically have targeted you, ask yourself why. I am the first to plead guily to some of these charges that I am about to pass; consider my writing as an act of repair for my own transgressions. Remember also that what I am talking about doesnt apply to some bad apples in the Golden Dawn Communty but extends to the greater majority of the community, which is infested by a plague which runs very deep, all the way down to its core; there are only some old-school left-overs that upholds the age old ideals of what the Golden Dawn should be all about. The greater majority has fallen from its origins, in my opinion, because of multiple factors and several reasons; which boils down to the fact that the occult community is working in the context of a corrupt western society and superficial post-modernist culture, gradually adapting to that societys and cultures intrinsic needs. Anyway, here are my arguments why I no longer attach those two words to my own person and to the Hermetic group that I am co-working with:

1. The Golden Dawn is a commercialized brand name and a cash cow.Since Israel Regardies publications, in particular The Golden Dawn, which created a great boom for the Golden Dawn Tradition following the publication of the 2nd Edition by Llewellyn in the late 1960’s, a success that was followed up by The Complete Golden Dawn System of Magic in the 1980s, the name Golden Dawn has become a popular brand attracting lots of potential consumers of spirituality. In the 1990s we saw a new generation of Golden Dawn authors who made themselves a name in the business, and some money as well, capitalizing on the name Golden Dawn in all of their titles. Today there is a legion of Golden Dawn authors, trying their very best to make a living on the remains of the Golden Dawn. Some of them even sell costly correspondence courses to the first bidder as a side income to their book sells. The Golden Dawn Tradition has become objectified and exploited. Although I have supported this phenomenon bying much of this literature in the past, I today resent this fact.

The glamorous aura of the name Golden Dawn has of course become a brand name in itself, because of the large volume of literature and famous historical personalities. Parties conscious of this attractive feature and economical potential of the Golden Dawn have tried to claim its name as their own, to attract a large following. Thus the Golden Dawn have found itself being trademarked as any commercial product. This fact has spawned almost two decades of competition and strife in the Golden Dawn Community as to who is the rightful owner of the brand name The Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn. Whatever lofty reasons or rationalizations they have presented to the public or judges as justifications of trademarking it, it always boils down to one simple fact: They want to capitalize on the name, for fame and glory, and the large commercial value of this ownership. I have come to resent this fact. However, this has not always been the case for me. For years on the Gyllene Gryningen BlogI have defended and tried to legitimize the right to own and protect that name, as a form of quality proof. I wont do that anymore, mainly because I resent the commercialization that all of that entails, but also because I dont believe that the name Golden Dawn has any worth left protecting. I certainly dont want it, nor do I need it.

After the enourmous boom that the Golden Dawn Tradition has experienced since the 1990s we have seen several big name Golden Dawn organizations, trying the very best to capitalize on the commercial potential of the spiritual market. We have seen aggressive advertisement, flashy web pages with cheesy catch phrases, and embarrassing commercials on YouTube selling the Golden Dawn as a spiritual product, to buy as any other product on the Internet, just by a clic on the mouse and a large enough PayPal account; you can as easily buy yourself some organic soap over the Internet as an authenic initiation. Today anyone can become a member, or worse, a initiate, just by easy access to the Internet and with some money stowed in the digital bank, without even seeing the interiors of a Temple. No discrimination at all as to who is applying; only based upon some standard form of questionnary at best. The most important quality being the money put into the membership. These big name Golden Dawn organizations either offer astral initiation, self-initiation, or clustered initiations” (i.e. they are allowed to go through several initiations in one single weekend), fraudulent at worst and a bad compromise at best. Today the typical Golden Dawn leader prefers quantity before quality in their members. I deeply resent this fact.

What is worse, you dont even have to be a initiate to get some training in the Golden Dawn Tradition today. It is only one of many plates to grab from the big smörgåsbord that we call neo-spirituality or neo-paganism. Nowadays there are travelling instructors and teachers who hold lectures, seminars and workshops, willing to sell their pre-packaged and lightly digested product - a watered down version of the Golden Dawn Tradition. Using modern technology, you may even attend webinars to receive training. The only thing standing in the way beween you and that instruction or teaching is money. No-one wants to question if you are even prepared spiritually and mentally to receive such training and instruction. You are not seen as a potential candidate for initiation - you are merely seen as a consumer and the only value that you carry with you is you wallet (or rather its contents). This is typical of the post-modernist neo-spiritual community, which is nothing other than a big spiritual market and commerce. Thus the Golden Dawn has become a part of the greater New Age-movement. It has degenerated into a americanized spiritual fast-food product of some sorts. I resent this fact, of course.

Not to speak of all of the Golden Dawn products that you can buy all over the Internet, not counting any of the books, magazines and other types of literature that I already have mentioned. I am talking about pre-made robes, magical implements (wands, cups, pentacles, swords and daggers, etc.), banners, pillars, altars, etc. for your personal Temple and magic, or even your do-it-yourself Order. Furthermore, for the armchair magician there is a host of Golden Dawn T-shirts, jackets, cups, pencils, and whatever, as your personal artifacts, to give you that special aura of occult mystique. And if you need some healing you can as easily buy elixirs, talismans and other magically enchanted commercial products, and long distance healing on top of that. For the curious with money there are CD:s, DVD:s and other kind of recordings, such as pod-casts, streamed videos, etc., to watch and get Golden Dawn instruction” from, like som kind of aerobics or power yoga, or whatever. I resent this fact. 

We no can longer speak of Golden Dawn students or true initiates, but rather of Golden Dawn consumers. Today, one of the greatest drives or motivating factors of Golden Dawn leaders is greed. Likewise, they give rise to greedy consumers, that want everything and that right now. Post-modern students demand to be taught and they claim their legal rigths as consumers. Unfortunately, yours truly have also fallen to this trap of commercialization. Over on YouTube you can watch and listen to me holding a lecture. On Internet you may also listen to me in a pod-cast being interviewed. All of this for free as far as a know, but to be wholly honest in the wider context of advertising and attracting potential members. Different people (quite a lot of them) have asked me when my book is finally coming out. I often answer them: Never. I have had several offers from publishing companies to write books, and to write articles for magazines. I simply wont fall for it. (Who would buy and read my stuff anyway?) I am finally done with this commercial game. The Golden Dawn cannot be sold as a commercial product, not in any form, book-wise or other; although it certainly is not for free, it requires something completely different from the student and initiate quality-wise than the mere purchasing power. Lets take greed out from the Golden Dawn and the Hermetic Tradition, once and for all!

2. The Golden Dawn is tainted by cultish practices and personality cults. There exists some really dangerous organizations posing as Golden Dawn orders which meet the standard criteria for religious cults, and there are in fact predators lurking for innocent spiritual game over on the Internet. Much to often, Golden Dawn leadership seems to be tainted with manipulation and coersion. Several of these leaders take themselves way to serious, especially after they have succeeded published some titles, expecting their own initiates to admire and venerate them as idols put upon a pedestal. They are motivated both by power and material greed; not the best qualities attached to a spiritual leader. Reflecting the greater society at large, leaders of occult societies, especially those that have ambitions to become the greatest and largest on earth, tend to show signs of suffering from a empathy deficit disorder. I lament this fact.

Some of these leaders, in an effort to boost their charismatic ego, evoke that old and highly effective myth of the Third Order and the Secret Chiefs”, regardless if that claim is substantiated with any grain of thruth or not. The most important quality in a leader seems to be that of feelings of exclusivity following the claim of being chosen by the Great Exalted Ones, this in itself constituting signs of infallacy and perfection on their part, who no-one may dare to question. The most common form of such authority is granted from so-called inner plane contacts”, but some even use the mysterious and secret Adept as a way to show off their own value. Some of these leaders are highly profficient con-men and well versed at cold-reading, using their abilities to provide predictions from the said Secret Chiefs. This is typical of the religious cult, where the cult leader often is the self-proclamed prophet, saint or christ, to be followed without question. Although I personally know that the concept of the Secret Chiefs by no means is a pure myth, I do resent things that has been done in Their name by scrupleless leaders. I resent this exploitation, and from now on you wont be reading any apologies defending Their existence on the Gyllene Gryningen Blog.

Some of the worst examples have transformed the Inner or Second Order into a religious cult, often with Christian pretexts. Thus they have taken the Golden Dawn, which in its very fabric is non-dogmatic and without any religious prejudices, and turned it into a organisation which meets all of the established criteria of a cult. As any religous cult, it has to have a high-priest who dictates to their Adeps what is right and what is wrong, by the power invested by the Secret Chiefs. And although the greater majority of Golden Dawn organizations seems to have steered away from this great fallacy, megalomania is still rampant amongst the highter echelongs of the Golden Dawn Community. Just take a look at the blogosphere if you dont believe me. This kind of power politics blends well with greed and commercialism; commercialism and power hunger are like two sides of the same coin, so to speak. So, lets take the lust for power out of the Golden Dawn and the Hermetic Tradition. 

3. The Golden Dawn is associated with Internet flame wars and order politics. Well, I dont believe I have to say that much about this sad Internet phenomenon or about order politics and flame wars, which I have referred to as the War of the Roses on the Gyllene Gryningen Blog, other than it is fed both by greed and lust for power. I suppose the rationale is that any news are good news, even bad ones; bad publicity is even more efficient than good publicity to attract readers and potential consumers. Behind any flame thrower sits a big melagomanic ego, often being gready of money and power, and / or of false pride. The interesting part is that flamers by necessity are drawn to each other; they need each other for their subsistence. The other side of this is that order politics are like any free market commerse; you do your very best to castigate your opponent / competitor to make your own product look better. In the long run this creates an environment with is contaminated with paranoia, and the sad truth is that paranoia tends to rub off. Melagomaniacs feed upon this and they often become paranoics themselves. The sad thing is that ones own paranoia feeds the others paranoia.

I myself must partially take the blame for some of the flame wars of late years. Although I still stand by my previous position, and take the right to criticize the behaviour of certain individuals and leaders of the Golden Dawn Community, I still believe that some contents of my message could have been much more tempered. Today I’m fed up with all of this paranoia, and with paranoiacs. I will definitely do my very best to moderate my criticism, without sacrificing my honesty in the process. From now on, the Gyllene Gryningen Blog will not serve as a base camp for any attacks against leaders and individuals of other organizations. Lets take flame wars, or better the entire Internet from the Golden Dawn and the Hermetic Tradition. 

4. The Greek Nazi organization Χρυσή Αυγή (Chrysi Avyi) has connoted the Golden Dawn to ultra-nationalism and racism. Unfortunately, laterly a neo-Nazi organization has raised its ugly head in Greece and won seats in the Greek parliment. This is bad in itself, but to make matters worse for us working withing the Golden Dawn Tradition, this organization or political party calles itself Χρυσή Αυγή or Chrysi Avyi which literary translates as “Golden Dawn”. This is very sad indeed, especially considering that the Golden Dawn Tradition, as tracing back its origin to the British occult society called The Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, founded in 1888, has absolutely nothing at all to do with nationalism, fascism or racism. The true Golden Dawn actually represents the very opposite of all of this; it advocates the concepts of Cosmopolity, Liberty and Tolerance against any creed or race. Not only have the Nazis taken our symbols from us in the past, but now they have hijacked our name as well. Thus, let us all who work the Golden Dawn system of magic voice our disgust towards the Greek Chrysi Avyi and uphold our high ideals in our public relations.

However, let us also be practical and realistic. There is no chance that the relatively small Golden Dawn Community in any way is able to change the connotations carried by the words
Golden Dawn in the minds of the general public. No-one carries swastikas from their necks today, regardless of the profoundness of that symbol, because of the tainted connotations made in the modern mind of the general public. Today, the name “Golden Dawn” is equally tained because of the Greek Nazis. I prefer not to explain myself everytime I mention the Golden Dawn to the common man. We have to deal with the fact that this name has lost its utility in the public capacity; it is useless to be frank, tainted as it is. I certainly wont use it anymore to describe anything that I represent.

5. Last and not least, the post-modernist and open source Golden Dawn has rejected its origins in the Tradition.This last point is somewhat of a confession. This is a honest and personal declaration. These are my own personal opinions that primarily represent myself, not necessarily that of anybody else of my brothers and sisters of my own Temple, although it does has consequences for them, me being one of its Chiefs.

With the exception of the last 7 years, I have walked most of my magical path of initiation quite isolated from the rest of the Golden Dawn Community. In the past I have been solely involved in a quite small and very tight circle of initiates, primarily in Sweden but also some other parts of Scandinavia and Central Europe. Most of all I have been involved in my own Temple which I founded by the authority of my former Chief back in 1997. In this environment I was fostered, quite safe and protected from the rest of the major Golden Dawn Community. During all of this I have always considered myself to be a Golden Dawner, although through the mentoring of my Order I have come to understand the greater Hermetic and Rosicrucian context from which Golden Dawn Tradition emerged.

A decade ago I experienced my worst Dark Night of the Soul following my admission into the Second Order, that is, I lost touch with the work and Current for almost three years, although keeping the flame of my own Temple somewhat alive (although we had stopped to initiate any new Neophytes). During these years the War of the Roses (the Golden Dawn flame War and court process) raged at the most. Thus, I was luckily spared from experiencing it myself and first hand. Of course I knew about the greater Golden Dawn Communitys dislike for my former Order after it had pronounced its contact with the Third Order back in 2003. I experienced the outbrake of that Flame War before retiring from active work and international participation of the management of that Order. I also received some news now and then from my former Chief when talking regularly over the phone. Still I didnt experience the magnitude of that division between my former Order and the rest of the Golden Dawn Community.

I already knew by 1999 that my former Order was different from the rest of the Community, following the General Reformation that was initiated by my former Chiefs, and the different older Rosicrucian currents issuing from this that vitalized our Order current. But I didnt imagine that it was becoming so distant from the rest of the community. Following the established communication with the Third Order in late 2002 I knew that my former Order was truly distinguised from the rest, although still part of the Golden Dawn Community”. The fact is that I never fully left the alchemical path during my Dark Night; I totally lost motivation for ceremonial. Still I felt as a Golden Dawner, as any other. 

I re-entered my traditional Golden Dawn (or rather Inner Order) work in late 2007 and have continued to do so since. Following that I have felt myself to be more as a Golden Dawner than ever. I also felt the urge to meet and interact with the rest of the community, the Flame War having more or less died out by then. By middle 2008 I started blogging to that effect, and have since met and interacted with lot of initiates from different camps, even those traditionally opposed to my Order. I have come to know some really good people as an outcome from this.

This has been nice, at least at the outset. For a while I really felt that I was part of the greater Golden Dawn Community”, although I was reminded now and then that I was somewhat different compared to those that I interacted with. I believed then, and quite naïve I must add, not having experienced the most ugly parts of the previous Flame War, that whatever seperated me from some members of the Golden Dawn Community was not that of actual philosophy and belief system, but rather that of politics. I was wrong in this estimation. In whatever manner I have tried to, I just cannot reach through to these people. And the more frustrated I have become, the more I have been pulled into the resurgence of the latest round of the War of the Roses, which you have been following on the Gyllene Gryningen Blog for the last three years or so.

It has, unfortunately, dawned upon me - especially during these three years - that the differences between myself, and that of my former Order which fostered me, and the rest of the Golden Dawn Community, especially as seen in America, is much more deeper than mere politics. Me and the vast majority calling themselves Golden Dawn initiates or students of the Golden Dawn have a fundamentally different outlook on what we are working with, although we might share the same ceremonial and read the same documents complied by William Wynn Westcott and Samuel Liddell MacGregor Mathers, and any of their Adepts. I term these concepts that I myself reject as modernist or post-modern. I believe that the last three years of blogging has expressed my views quite aptly; no need to repeat myself here in detail. Let me make a short and consise summeration of the different points:

1. The disbelief in the historical existance of a actual Rosicrucian brotherhood, and that the Golden Dawn Tradition represents an authencic continuation of it, because there is lack of evidence which can survive the scrutiny of academic research.

2. The disbelief in the historical and contemporary existance of a actual Third Order or real Secret Chiefs working on both the physical as well as the inner planes, and that the Golden Dawn Tradition is derived from it, because there is lack of evidence which can survive the scrutiny of academic research.

3. The opinion that the Golden Dawn Tradition should be the subject of academic study and that only such scientific study may shed any truthful light about it, which rejects the existance of any possible secret or hidden organizations or oral traditions (i.e. the Third Order) behind it serving as custodians of a continuous and authentic Hermetic Tradition.

4 The belief that W.W. Westcott and S.L. MacGregor Mathers simply compiled the Golden Dawn Tradition from manuscripts found in Masonic and Academic libraries, and that they themselves were not initiatied into it or the Hermetic Tradition behind it.

5. The belief that lineage has no value in the Golden Dawn Tradition, that anybody may initiate himself or herself into it, and that anyone may found a Golden Dawn Temple just by picking up published literature or documents on the Internet.

6. The belief that self-initiation or astral initiation works sufficiently and is comparable to physical initiation, and that it can trace its roots in older tradition predating post-modernism.

7. The belief that everyting in the Golden Dawn Tradition and the Rosicrucian Tradition has been published and that you can find everything on Internet and / or in libraries or book shops, and that this state of things has been santioned by the guardians of the tradition.

8. The belief that it is not only allowed to publish anything that hasnt already been published from the Golden Dawn Tradition and the Rosicrucian Tradition, but a duty as well, to accomodate the general public and self-initiates or DIY Temples.

9. That the Golden Dawn is an open source” or public domain tradition that enyone may tamper with or reconstruct as he or she likes, after their own preferences, and that this in itself is a sign of a good magician and initiate, or initiatic accomplishment and spiritual attainment.

10. The belief that the state of incompleteness of the Golden Dawn Tradition, and in particular its Inner Order Grades, may be reconstructed simply by using the published sources as spring boards, without the aid of anything (an in particular without the aid of the Third Order), by simply relying on the creative genius of the student.

11. That S.L. MacGregor Mathers was a mental case and that the schism of 1900 was legitime because of that, and that the Adeptus Minor Grade brings sufficient lineage and understanding of the Golden Dawn Tradition to authorize such a schism and the continuation of it.

12. That the Stella Matutina branch of the Order developed a much more advanced and magical tradition, and that this represents the only true and legitimate Golden Dawn Tradition.

13. The belief that W.W. Westcott, S.L. MacGregor Mathers, or any of thier contemporary Adepts, didnt sufficiently understand the Golden Dawn Tradition, their own creation, and that only later generation of Adepts did that and that post-modernist Temples and Orders in particular understand it most of all and has made it truly magical.

These are only some and the most common post-modernist misconceptions that cannot be reconciled with the Traditionalist stance on the Golden Dawn Tradition. There are problably several more that can be added to it (and I invite the gentle reader to contribte with more post-modern notions that has nothing to do with the traditional point of view).

Today, when walking in the landscape of the greater Golden Dawn Community i feel as a stranger in a strange land. I feel completely alien. We speak the same words and use the same alphabet between us, but we cannot understand each other because we interpret the symbols in a different way. Traditionalists as myself are marginalized and find ourselves in a extreme minority. The world we live in is quite hostile against us. I have no urge any longer to argue with it. The best thing for people as me is to resort to voluntary isolation. To ignore the rest. The internet is flooded with would-be initiates who nurtures concepts that are completely alien to me. They are not at all interested in listening to whatever I have to say; they instead feel provoked and even hurt by whatever I say. I have also grown weary of hearing myself sounding as such a whiner; not at all an attractive trait.  

Thus today, because of these five points, I no longer feel as a Golden Dawner. I dont want to call myself that anymore or to be associated with anyone referring himself as such. Today, because of the state of things, the words Golden Dawn brings with it connotations that I in no way represent, not even in the very least. Yes, call me a Hermeticist or Rosicrucian", and Qabalist even, or Christian Esotericist for that matter. But dont call me a Golden Dawner.

I no longer agree that this name has any marketing value, or any value at all for that matter. On the contrary, it brings the wrong attention to what the work is actually about, however beautiful the words Golden and Dawn are or once represented. As it says in the A∴O∴ 0=0 ritual: 
It [i.e. the Rosicrucian Order of the A∴O∴] was sometime known in English speaking countries as the Order of the Golden Dawn, or the Golden Dawn in the Outer. But as this name has been recently usurped by certain unscrupulous persons, to cover their malpractices, it use has been abandoned for a period.
Nothing new under the sun, huh? For some time now I have changed the name of the Outer Order in Scandinavia from Gyllene Gryningen (which is a direct translation of the English words Golden Dawn) into Gryende Morgonrodnaden (which translates as Nascent Aurora into English and is in turn a translation from the German Aufgehenden Morgenröte), a name which connects the current to the German Rosicrucian tradition and the 19th Century Aurora Naissante lodge of Frankfurt-am-Main (from whence issued the original GD Cypher Mss). And now, following the Winter Solstice of 2013, when I have officially made my declararation independece, i definitely no longer feel bounded or obliged to the name Golden Dawn”. 

I do not any longer consider my Temple to be a part of the greater Golden Dawn Community. It does work the Golden Dawn Tradition, yes. But it does it being very aware and conscious about the greater Hermetic and Rosicrucian, and thus Alchemical, tradition. My students may call themselves whatever they want, but I regard them primarily to be Hermetic initiates which is much greater than being but a Golden Dawn initiate. I must also add that I do believe in the possibility that many initiates in the greater Golden Dawn Community silently are doing a spledid work and probably doesnt nessecarily box themselves in as their leaders do.

Please do not misinterpret me by reading this, please dont misrepresent me either. I have the strongest faith for the tradition that is known as the Golden Dawn and which was put together into a workable format by our ancestors, such as MacGregor Mathers and Westcott. It is the majority of the people professing to work it that I am distancing myself from, people that has been cut away from its living and oral tradition and mostly know it from published books. People that cannot look further back into the Tradition than the late 19th Century. People who has tanken liberties with it and profaned it, making money out of it, etc. And now lately taken our name and put it into a racist and ultra-nationalist setting. This is the reason that i will end my active participation in the greater and english speaking Golden Dawn Community”, retreat back to my native Hyperborea and start writing in Swedish again on the Gyllene Gryningen Blog, which it was meant to in the first place. Pat Zalewski’s refutation of my article

THE OTHER DAYPat Zalewski published a video on YouTube in which he refutes my points in an article that I wrote on this blog, which he refers to as “that self-appointed bastion of egoic Golden Dawn truth”. The article in question, which Mr. Zalewski calls a hatchet job, that I wrote in mid 2008, is entitled The truth about Pat Zalewski and the Whare Ra. Before reading any further, I recommend my gentle reader to make a quick read through this article, as I don’t want to repeat myself to much, keeping this blog post short and down to the point. Following this I recommed a viewing of the video by Mr. Zalewski, which is quite short, being only 18:16 minutes long. Unfortunately, for some reason, the direct link to YouTube is missing, but it can be reached via Nick Farrells blog which has a link to the video.

Now compare what I wrote in my original article with that which Mr. Zalewski is addressing in his refutation to it, in particular his accusations towards me, which boils down to that (a) I (contrary to him) lack any primary sources in my estimation and analysis, only being reliant on secondary sources, and that (b) I am presenting a belief that the Whare Ra had a single policy and teaching, which shows my complete ignorance and a considerable amount of lack of research. However, what you, my gentle reader, will see in my presentation is a series of accurate quotes of statements made by Mr. Zalewski himself and those of Tony Fuller (both constituting equal secondary sources), and me quite disoriented trying the very best to make sense of it all. 

I still vividly remember that my writing of this article was prompted by a honest chock reaction in response to the revelations coming from that debate, as I had grown accustomed to the idea or ideal that Mr. Zalewski had presented a truthful account of official Whare Ra ritual protocol. Mr. Zalewskis and Mr. Fullers accounts and statements was a virutal eye opener for me and has shaped my view on the Whare Ra and Stella Matutina since then, not to mention concerning Mr. Zalewskis actual relation to it. This was the only agenda that I had in writing it. But obviously, it has enangered Mr. Zalewski quite a lot and shaped his attitude towards me, which is quite venomous. But thats o.k. and the feeling is not mutual; I still respect the man and his teachings.

Now, Mr. Zalewski accuses me of claiming that there was a offical teaching on ritual in the Whare Ra. Actually, no; I didnt say that really. What I did said however is that in reading Mr. Zalewskis original editions of the Z-5 (the Llewellyn editions from the early 1990s) I got the impression that there in fact was a official Whare Ra doctrine, and that Mr. Zalewski had represented it faithfully, having received it through authenitc oral esoteric transmission. When he came out honest about the volatility of these teachings, and the amount of his own creative input back in 2008, as I said, I was quite surprised and startled. 

I dont actually need primary sources, other than his own books, to judge how Mr. Zalewski tried to present these supposed Whare Ra teachings back then; it suffices reading them. My article was not a historical survey per se, although it surely presented a historical context to his writing; however it wasnt the actual and historical Whare Ra that was under question, it was Mr. Zalewski and his presentation of it. In the 1990s all that we had was his own accounts of the Whare Ra teachings and its history; now we have other sources as well, such as Tony Fullers, which I presented in full in my article.

The claim by Mr. Zalewski in his video, that there were no official Whare Ra teachings, are no news, actually. If you have read my article, you will find a lengthy quote from Mr. Fuller which fully corroborates this notion. My point is that Mr. Zaleski never claimed or explained this factual situation concerning Whare Ra teachings back in the 1990s. It is only now, following this debate between him and Mr. Fuller (and which I made public in my article), that Mr. Zalewski confesses this himself, reluctantly it seems. 

Actually, as you my gentle reader will see, my main thesis, based on Mr. Fullers account which is then corroborated by Mr. Zalewski in his confessions, both in my article and in the video, is that there was no official teachings of the Whare Ra concerning group ritual. In the video, Mr. Zalewski tries to lecture me that I had failed to see this as a fact. How strange that is, considering the contents of my article. I suspect that it has been my article and Mr. Fullers rhetoric presented there, that has prompted Mr. Zalewski to change his policy regarding how to address the non-conformity of Whare Ra teaching.

How strange it is that he refers to my article as a hatchet job”, considering the fact that he has become some sorts of a self-proclaimed Harry Houdini or James Randi of the Golden Dawn Community, doing much effort and going into great pains in debunking other Orders lineages, in particular the one transmitted by Desmond Bourke. Like Houdini and Randi nurtures a hatred towards psychics and occultists, Mr. Zalewski abhores lineages and hates Secret Chiefs, that is any lineages or authorities which are not his own and outside the pale of the Order of the Table Round.

How strange it is also, that it has taken almost six years for him to address my article, exactly at a point when I and my new Temple in the Outer, following this Vernal Equinox, is about to manifest a Nova Aurora Nascente in Hyperborea!Following my official resignation from the H.O.G.D./A+O at Winter Solstice, Mr. Zalewski has also attacked my lineages over at the Watcher of the Dawn blog, on two occasions, which he brefly hints at in the video. All of this is surely not happening by chance, and it is obvious that this new manifestation is making some individuals of the communtiy quite nervous. Stay tuned to this blog to read our upcoming Declamatio Fraternitatis! 

A final observation

I guess, becoming or being a “Golden Dawn leader” makes you an open target from all camps, including the spiritual family that you have once abandoned. I suppose it comes with the territory. But my suggestion to all of you Golden Dawn leaders who feel threatened by my recent actions, or have an ax to grind with me because of past dealings, is very simple: Just stay away from my path and leave me alone. I have no interest in you or your work; we have so little in common that there is no need to feel competition from my side, as we are not even reaching out to the same people with our respecive operations. My ideal candidate is not that of yours. So, let us simply ignore each other and continue with our respective visions of the Great Work. I believe that I have said enough concerning my views regarding that of the general Golden Dawn Community; I have no need to repeat myself. I especially have no ambition to name call anyone or assassinate anyones character. However, if you make a direct stab at me, do not expect that I wont try to parry your attempt at attacking me. Lets spare our readers that tragedy; we have had enough of that already and nobody really needs it....seriously.

A last minute confession

Some of my gentle readers may not take my account seriously concering that I was shocked and startled by the truthful accounts given by Pat Zalewski and Tony Fuller concering the Whare Ra and their dealings with it. Believe it or not, but it actually is my honest account of what did happen six years ago. Back then I hadnt yet been wrapped up in the paranoid worldview of Golden Dawn leaders, of both my own former Order and that of others. So I did compile and write that article of my own initiative, without any coersion of any kind. Over the years following that, being somewhat hatched out, through that initial experience, into the harsh reality of Golden Dawn War of the Roses, things changed as I gradually adapted my former Chiefs martial paradigm. Paranoia has a way of rubbing off; it is highly contagious. Thus, I later became an ardent defender of the rose

My final hatching and initiation into this severe existence was the profanation of the A∴O∴ material and the character assassination of its founder; I now was under the spell of my former chief, who took advantage of and fueled my anger. I clearly was leaning to much towards the Black Pillar of Severity during that phase of my life; it may have had something to do with my Adeptus Major process as well. The final one and a half years has been a constant struggle to break that mesmerising spell and reach for the White Pillar of Mercy. That process is still continuing to this very day. Six years ago I still was a spiritual virgin, lacking any experience of the greater Golden Dawn Community; I am not a Virgo any more as I have learned my lessons the hard way. My blog represents a documentation of this process, which corresponds to the three Grades of the Second Order. 

Now, I am not blaming anyone of these leaders; the greatest responsibility is and has always been my own; I always had a choice and no one forced me into anything. On the contrary, having a natural tendency towards severity, I have been quite proficient in developing my own rhetoric and chritical analysis of the Golden Dawn Community, something that I still benefit from today. As an outcome of all of this, I have consciously adapted a Traditionalist outlook on the Mysteries. So it has been a learning experience which I dont regret. But some paranoid voices can be very convincing, indeed. And we must remember that today we are living in the Kali Yuga age of the Golden Dawn, in which the counter-traditional and counter-initiatic powers are paramount. This is the main reason why I have choosen to retreat back to my native Hyperborea and focus on whats truly important, to protect and preserver the Tradition and to pass it on to worthy seekers of the Nascent Aurora.

The Alchemy of turning Wrath into Love

Pat Zalewski took another evasive stab at me yesterday as a response to my previous blog post, at the comment section of the Watcher of the Dawn blog, which he uses as his primary vehicle to attack me it seems. I know that I previously wrote that I would parry any further stabs against me. However, instead of doing that, I will pray for his soul that he finally finds peace and tranquility, and leaves the fiery Wrath World (of Geburah) to embrace the soothing Light World (of Chesed), as the Böhmeans would have put it, as that sulphurous fire sooner or later will consume him and become his own undoing. I pray that he will let go of the hatred and embrace compassion instead.

As is common with persons who succumb to wrath and hatred, as becomes evident in Mr. Zalewskis comment, there is lots of projection going on against their targets. So he accuses me of writing conscious fabrications regarding my lineages, something that he has himself being accused of doing in relation to his own supposed lineage to the Whare Ra, primarily by Tony Fuller which I have used as my main source. He accuses me also of writing attack blogs, but what is he himself doing and from a anonymous hate blog? All of this are traits of someone living in the Wrath World. I know from my own experience how it is to live there (which is evident from my own previous writing), and how hard it is to leave all of that behind.

But there is no alternative and thus I am currently struggling to leave my own Wrath World behind me, but in taking such a decision, the temptations to remain in old habits becomes all the more obvious as the anti-initiatic forces become mobilised. (Mr. Zalewski is in good company here.) The first step to embrace the Light Word was my resignation from the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn (Rosicrucian Order of Alpha et Omega). I believe that Böhmean Theosophy serves as a good diagnosis tool of the current situation of the Golden Dawn Community, but that it also provides the cure. Mr. Zalewski, who confesses to embrace spiritual alchemy should perhaps turn his attention to the true Spiritual Alchemical Tradition of Jacob Böhme and his successors in German Theosophy. Not only him but the majority of the Golden Dawn leaders should practice the Alchemy of turning Wrath into Love. 

This is exactly my ambition with the mission of the Aurora Nascente in Hyperborea; in distancing ourselves from the international order community we want to turn the wrath of the old egregore into the love of our new Hyperborean egregore. This is the most viable way to practice spiritual alchemy in a group setting. Böhmean philosophy and practice is also very useful for an Adeptus Exemptus, which is the common Grade pertinent to a Golden Dawn leader, at a minimum. For me it has become almost as a revelation, which really speaks to my heart. In token of this practice of the Way of the Heart, I will start looking over my past postings on the Gyllene Gryningen Blog and do a sanitizing of it, delete altogether irrelevant posts and make due disclaimers to parts of others which might have some other overall value.

The two Pillars of the Golden Dawn Qabalah

TO THE GENTLEreader. This blog post is actually a sanitized version of a previous one posted 2012-04-24, almost two years ago. It was addressing something that Olen Rush had said on his now disused blog which is quite irrelevant today, so I wont repeat it now. Looking back on the original version, I feel that the majority of its contents was the result of a alien paradigm that I no longer want to support and that clearly is the product of the Wrath World to use a Böhmean term. I have also removed all of the comments as these refer to the part that is sanitized. However, the other half have some relevance today, as it explains my view on the two pillars that constitute the Golden Dawn Qabalah, the Sabbatian Qabalah stemming from the Asiatic Brethren and the Hermetic or Christian Qabalah with its origins in the Italian Renaissance and the Florentine Platonic Academy.

First of all I want to acknowledge Mr. Rush’s level of scholarism in the field of Sabbathian Qabalah, the Asiatics, the R.R. et A.C., etc. He has been somewhat of a champion in forging a link between the Asiatic Brethren and the Golden Dawn, which is documented on my blog in the posting entitled The Origins of the Qabalah of the Golden Dawn and its follow-up The Frankist Qabalah, and lastly in my essay Was Jacob Frank a Rosicrucian? One of his earliest appearances was on the International Golden Dawn Forum, and in these my three articles on the Golden Dawn Qabalah I have quoted Mr. Rush extensively. I must admit that his postings over at that yahoo-group inspired me to do my own research and through these efforts I had developed a good fraternal relationship with him on the Internet. 

So, regarding the Holy Qabalah of the Golden Dawn it in part constitutes of the Sabbatian Qabalah (as transmitted to the overtly Sabbatian Asiatic Brethren and the Jewish lodge in Frankfurt, the Loge sur Aufgehenden Morgenröthe established in 1807), and that of the Reinassance “Hermetic” Qabalah (which the Asiatics were lacking). This unique blend of these two important Qabalistic streams makes the Golden Dawn Qabalah unique in respect of all other Fraternities, including the Asiatics.

But the Sabbatian component of the Golden Dawn Qabalah, surely enough (through the Cypher Mss.), found its way through the Asiatics. It may perhaps have been transmitted through Samuel Hayyim Falk and Frederick Hockley as well. However, the Sabbatian component or aspect of the Golden Dawn Tradition is also indebted to Kenneth MacKenzie in its establishment, him being the important link between German Rosicrucianism and the Golden Dawn through his own intermediary society, the Fratres Lucis (which was a continuation of the tradition of the Asiatic Brethren, whose forerunner was called Fratres Lucis).

There is no doubt that there is a strong presence of the Sabbatian Qabalah in the Golden Dawn. However, the Reinassance form of “Christian” or “Hermetic” Qabalah shouldn’t be underestimated either. If any this latter form of the Qabalah constitutes the major part of the Qabalistic teachings of the Golden Dawn, spiced up as it were, by the antinomian “heretic” teachings of the Sabbatians. As an example, the Tree of Life glyph as used in the Golden Dawn, together with the corresponding Hebrew letters attached to the 22 Paths, came from Athanasius Kircher’s Oedipus Aegyptiacus in 1652, i.e. from the Hermetic stream of our Tradition. This illustration has been attached to the header of this post.

We shouldn’t forget that while the Asiatics were overly Qabalistic (with their foundation in the Hebrew / Jewish tradition), the Golden Dawn was overly Hermetic tracing its origins in the Reinassance and beyond, predating anything Sabbatian (or even Lurian). Thus, the Sabbatian component was a later addition which was fused to the Rosicrucian current through the Asiatic Brethren in the 18th Century, and later transmitted through the Loge sur Aufgehenden Morgenröthe, whose Hebrew name was that of Chevrah Zerach Bequr Aur (on the Golden Dawn Cypher Mss. we find the almost identical phrase: “Chevrah Zerach Aur Bequr”). But the Hermetic Qabalah has a stronger foundation and older origins compared to the Sabbatian in the Golden Dawn.

I Universums Härskares Namn, låtom er alla höra vårt Declamatio!

HERMETISKAORDENAV DEN GRYENDE MORGONRODNADEN (H∴O∴G∴M+R) förkunnade när Sol inträdde i Aries i nådens år 2008 med sitt Praedicatio Fraternitatis att den åter hade slagit upp dörrarna till sitt svenska Tempel efter en längre tids tystnad och att Orden i detta hade avlagt sig den gamla beteckningen GYLLENE GRYNINGENS HERMETISKA ORDEN (en ursprunglig försvenskning av namnet HERMETIC ORDER OF THE GOLDEN DAWN). I samband med detta namnbyte lanserade den svenska Orden sitt unika sigill, vilket var baserad på symbolen för Den Allmänna Reformationen anno 1999 (Reformatio Fraternitatas Ad Rosae Crucis Anno 1999), den vita triangeln krönt av det röda korset och den gyllene rosen, med tillägg av en törnbuske som utgick från triangeln och slingrade sig runt ett strålande kors för att utveckla den gyllene rosen i korsets skärningspunkt.

Med detta namnbyte ville vår nordiska Orden återknyta sina rötter till den tyska Frimurarlogen L’AURORE NAISSANTE (LOGE SUR AUFGEHENDEN MORGENRÖTHE) vilket grundades i Frankfurt-am-Main år 1807 och som på hebreiska kallade sig CHEVRAH ZERACH BEQUR AUR, identiskt med det hebreiska namnet för HERMETIC ORDER OF THE GOLDEN DAWN (H∴O∴G∴D∴) som grundades i London under Den Allmänna Reformationens år anno 1888. Namnet på denna tyska Rosenkorsiska Frimurarloge i Frankfurt, vilket måste anses vara det ursprungliga modertemplet till H∴O∴G∴D∴, översätts till GRYENDE MORGONRODNADENS LOGE. Namnet ”Gryende Morgonrodnaden” utgör sålunda en mer ursprunglig och korrekt beteckning på vår Tradition i jämförelse med det vulgariserade engelska uttrycket ”Golden Dawn”.

H∴O∴G∴M+R utgjorde i samband med detta namnbyte dock fortfarande officiellt en formell jurisdiktion under ett internationellt Ordenssamfund (ROSICRUCIAN ORDER OF ALPHA ET OMEGA), trots att den i alla praktiska hänseenden hade utvecklat en autonom kropp som hade föresatt sig att implementera Den Allmänna Reformationen efter unika svenska och nordiska behov. Hela dess verksamhet har, förutom att fortfara med att erbjuda traditionell invigning och undervisning, varit att manifestera en Reformatio Minore Anno 2010, ett arbete som inleddes redan i samband med att Sol inträttde i Capricornusår 2007 och som nu har fullbordats när Sol har trätt in i Ariesår 2014. Ett frö planterades som har fått gro i sju års tid för att nu till fullo blomma upp till en praktfull Ros.

Ordens invigningssystem och studiematerial har i Den Mindre Reformationens namn fått genomgå en omfattande översyn och nödvändig korrektur för att göra vår tradition praktiskt tillämpbar enligt Den Allmänna Reformationens riktlinjer från 1999, samtidigt som den har gjorts bakåtkompatibel med den förra Allmänna Reformationen anno 1888. Alla Grader har reviderats och fått kännetecken och lösenord som återfinns i publicerad litteratur ersatta med nya, unika för den nordiska jurisdiktionen, i syfte att återställa det hermetiska kärlet och att skapa en självhushållande egregore. Studiematerialet har vidare inte blott till fullo översatts till det svenska språket utan även utvecklats och expanderats i signifikativ omfattning för att möta den nordiske medlemmens behov att erhålla ett traditionellt studiematerial av högsta kvalitet, oavsett vart denne studerar. Sålunda presenteras nordiska studenter en unik och traditionell studieplan utan motsvarighet någon annanstans.

Under dessa sju år i namnet av H∴O∴G∴M+R har den nordiska jurisdiktionen passivt observerat hur det allmänna Golden Dawn-samfundet i övrigt sakta men säkert har blivit besatt av mottraditionella krafter, tendenser som inte heller har skonat det internationella ordenssamfund av vilket den nordiska jurisdiktionen har utgjort en del. Det internationella Golden Dawn-samfundet har hemfallit åt en allt mer utbredd vulgarisering, profanering och kommersialisering. Detta är tendenser som den nordiska jurisdiktionen har tagit avstånd från och aktivt motarbetat. Samtidigt med detta har H∴O∴G∴M+R allt mer anammat en uttalat traditionalistisk ståndpunkt, vilket med tiden har gjort det svårt för den nordiska jurisdiktionen att förlika sig med utvecklingen i ordenssamfundet i övrigt och respektive kroppar har med tiden vuxit ifrån varandra. Samtidigt har vår Orden återfunnit sin ursprungliga nordiska eller HYPERBOREISKA hemmahörighet.

Tiden är nu mogen för oss att bryta alla våra tidigare förbindelser, band, allianser och lojaliteter med det internationella Golden Dawn-samfundet, oavsett form, för att skydda det nordiska H∴O∴G∴M+R från den mottraditionella sjukdomen och i syfte att bevara Traditionen obefläckad. Detta inleddes vederbörligen när Sol inträttde i Capricornusår 2013, då vår Orden bröt sig ur moderorganisationen, exakt sex år efter att H∴O∴G∴M+R beslutade sig att träda fram ur skuggorna och regla upp sitt Tempels dörrar för alla seriösa kandidater. Sex år efter att vi kungjorde vårt Praedicatio Fraternitatis vill vi nu kungöra vår Declamatio, vilket på alla punkter bekräftar vårt tidigare manifest, dock iakttagande följande åtgärder som vi har varit nödgade att vidtaga:

Vi deklarerar att Sol har trätt in i Aries i nådens år 2014 och att detta också markerar den fullbordade manifestationen av HERMETISKA ORDEN AV DEN GRYENDE MORGONRODNADEN i Det Yttre såsom ett i alla avseenden självständigt och autonomt ordenssällskap. Vår Orden har genom detta satt som sin främsta mission att i Norden manifestera en:

Nova Aurora Nascente in Hyperborea! 

För att manifestera denna nyorientering i vår egregore och för att stadfästa dess självständighet och integritet proklamerar vi vårt förutvarande Tempel, ursprungligen auktoriserat när Sol inträdde i Ariesår 1997 av ROSENKORS-ORDEN, ALPHA ET OMEGA och officiellt känt såsom ALPHA ET OMEGA TEMPEL No. 9 AV GRYENDE MORGONRODNADEN, vara för evigt slutat och avvecklat. I dess ställe, rest ur askan av det forna Templet, deklarerar vi härmed öppnandet av ett nytt och oberoende Nordiskt Modertempel att utgöra kärnverksamheten hos H∴O∴G∴M+R, vars namn och siffra är förseglat och skyddat från den yttre världens insyn. Detta nya HYPERBOREISKA Modertempel i Den Yttre Orden är fullt auktoriserat och har ett legitimt privilegiebrev utfärdat av vår Inre eller Andra Ordens Archon Basileus, i egenskap av en Adeptus Exemptus. Vidare besitter vår Orden alla privilegier och rättigheter genom vår högste ämbetsman, regelrätt installerad enligt gängse praxis och tradition.

H∴O∴G∴M+R utgör dock inte någon nytt ordenssällskap då den utgör en obruten länk till och kontinuitet av det ursprungliga Tempel som grundades år 1997, vilket i sin tur har utgjort en i rakt nedstigande led legitim avkomma till det ursprungliga HERMETIC ORDER OF THE G∴D∴ som grundades i London 1888 av S. L. MacGregor Mathers och William Wynn Westcott, vilket år 1906 vederbörligen bytte namn till ROSICRUCIAN ORDER OF A∴O∴, en Orden som återuppstod legitimt i Paris år 1993 auktoriserat av tvenne Adepti Exempti i London, England. År 1998 blev vårt Tempel tillsammans med ett annat svenskt Tempel auktoriserat av ett sändebud från Ahathôor Tempel No. 7 i Paris och blev då officiellt ett ALPHA ET OMEGA-tempel. Vårt nya Modertempel från 2014 är rest på samma grund som vårt avvecklade Tempel från 1997.

Med vårt Declamatio vill vi också kungöra att vår Orden har tagit initiativet tillsammans med andra besläktade brödraskap runt om i världen till en internationell Konfederation av oberoende och autonoma Tempel och Ordenssällskap. Samtliga medlemmar av denna Rosenkorsiska Konfederation arbetar inom Golden Dawn-traditionen specifikt och i Hermetiska, Qabalistiska och Rosenkorsiska traditioner i allmänhet, utifrån en traditionalistisk grundsyn. Sålunda innebär detta inte att H∴O∴G∴M+Rär isolerad från det övriga samfundet bara för att vi formellt har brutit alla band med vår forna internationella moderorganisation och tagit avstånd från mottraditionen; låt det vara känt att vår Orden utgör en länk i en brödjakedja av ett flertal traditionella Ordenssällskap som sträcker sig långt utanför vårt inhemska HYPERBOREA.

Låt det för våra inhemska HYPERBOREISKA läsare vara känt att Modertemplet i första hand rekryterar medlemmar från västra Sverige; Västra Götalands Län och Hallands Län. Dessutom kräver vi att kandidater underkastar sig en prövotid före sin upptagning såsom medlem i H∴O∴G∴M+R. In the Name of the Lord of the Universe, hear you all our Declamatio! 

The HERMETIC ORDEROFTHE NASCENT AURORA (H∴O∴N∴A) declared, when Sol entered into Aries in the year of our Lord 2008, with its Praedicatio Fraternitatis that it had re-opened the doors of its Swedish Temple after a long period of silence, and that the Order had shed its old designation, the HERMETIC ORDEROFTHE GOLDEN DAWN. In conjunction with this name change the Swedish Order introduced its unique seal, which was based on the symbol of the General Reformation anno 1999 (Reformatio Fraternitatas Ad Rosae Crucis Anno 1999), the white triangle surmounted by the red cross and golden rose, with the addition of a thorn-bush issuing from the triangle and coiling around a raying cross to unfold the golden rose in the intersection of the cross.

With this name change our Scandinavian Order wanted to trace its roots back to the German Freemasonic Lodge L’AURORE NAISSANTE (LOGESUR AUFGEHENDEN MORGENRÖTHE) which was founded in Frankfurt-am-Main in 1807, which in Hebrew called itself the CHEVRAH ZERACH BEQUR AUR, identical to the Hebrew name for the HERMETIC ORDEROFTHE GOLDEN DAWN (H∴O∴G∴D∴) which was founded in London during the year of the General Reformation anno 1888. The name of this German Rosicrucian Masonic lodge in Frankfurt, which must be considered to be the original mother temple of the H∴O∴G∴D∴, translates as the LODGE OF THE NASCENT AURORA. The name “Nascent Aurora” thus represents a more original and accurate description of our Tradition in comparison with the vulgar English expression “Golden Dawn”.

However, despite this name change H∴O∴N∴A∴ still officially formed a formal jurisdiction under the international Order community (the ROSICRUCIAN ORDER OF ALPHA ET OMEGA), although for all practical purposes it had developed an autonomous body which had set itself out to implement the General Reformation following unique Swedish and Scandinavian requirements. In addition to the continous offering of traditional initiation and teaching, all of its activities centered on the manifestation of a Reformatio Minore Anno 2010, a work that was launched in conjunction with the Sol entering Capricorn in 2007, and which now has been completed when Sol has entered Aries in 2014. A seed was planted that has been germinating for seven years and is now fully blooming into a glorious Rose.

The initiatory system and  curriculum of the Order has, in the name of the Lesser Reformation, had to be substantially reviewed and put through necessary correction to make our tradition practically applicable according to the guidelines of the General Reformation of 1999, whilst having been made backward compatible with the previous General Reformation anno 1888. All Grades have been revised and the signs and passwords, which can be found in published literature, replaced with new that are unique for the Scandinavian jurisdiction, in order to restore the hermetic vessel and create a self-subsistent egregore. Moreover, the curriculum has also substantially been developed and expanded to meet the needs of the Scandinavian member to receive a traditional study material of highest quality, regardless of where he is studying. Thus, Scandinavian students are presented a unique and traditional curriculum without parallel.

During these seven years, and in the name of H∴O∴N∴A∴, the Scandinavian jurisdiction has passively observed how the general Golden Dawn Community as a whole has slowly but surely become obsessed by counter-traditional powers, tendencies that has not spared the international order community of which the Scandinavian jurisdiction has formed a part. The international Golden Dawn community has succumbed to an increasingly widespread vulgarization, profanation and commercialisation. These are tendencies that the Scandinavian jurisdiction has rejected and actively opposed. In parallel to this, H∴O∴N∴A∴ has increasingly been embracing an explicit traditionalist position, which over time has made it difficult for the Scandinavian jurisdiction to come to terms with certain developments in the order community as a whole, and each body has slowly grown apart as a result of this. Meanwhile, our Order has rediscovered its original Scandinavian or HYPERBOREAN affiliation.

The time has come for us to break all our previous relations, strings, alliances and allegiances with the international Golden Dawn Community, in whatever form, to protect the Scandinavian H∴O∴N∴A∴ from the counter-traditional disease and in order to preserve the tradition immaculate. This process started properly when Sol entered Capricorn in 2013, when our Order broke away from the parent organisation, exactly six years after H∴O∴N∴A∴ had decided to re-emerge from the shadows and unlock its Temple doors for all serious candidates. Six years following our announcement of the Praedicatio Fraternitatis, we now want to announce our Declamatio, which on all accounts confirms our previous manifesto, however, observing the following measures that we have been forced to take:

We declare that Sol has entered Aries in the year of our Lord 2014, and that this also marks the consummated manifestation of the HERMETIC ORDEROFTHE NASCENT AURORA in the Outer as in all respects an independent and autonomous fraternity. Our Order has thus set as its primary mission in Scandinavia to manifest a:

Nova Aurora Nascente in Hyperborea! 

In order to manifest this new orientation in our egregore and to enshrine its independence and integrity we hereby proclaim that our former Temple, originally authorized by the ROSICRUCIAN ORDER OF ALPHA ET OMEGA when Sol entered into Aries in 1997, officially known as the ALPHA ET OMEGA TEMPLE NO. 9 OFTHE NASCENT AURORA, has been duly closed and permanently dismantled. In its place, raised from the ashes of the former Temple, we herewith declare the opening of a new and independent Scandinavian Mother Temple to constitute the core working of the H∴O∴N∴A∴, whose name and number shall be sealed and protected from gaze of the outer world. This new HYPERBOREAN Mother Temple in the Outer Order is fully authorised and has a legitimate charter issued by our Inner or Second Order’s Archon Basileus, acting as an Adeptus Exemptus. Furthermore, our Order possess all the privileges and rights by our Chief Officer, legally installed according to custom and tradition.

However, H∴O∴N∴A∴ is not a new fraternity as it constitutes an unbroken link to and serves to be a direct continuation of the original Temple founded in 1997, which in turn was constituted as a legitimate and direct lineal descendant of the original HERMETIC ORDER OF THE G∴D∴ founded 1888 in London by S.L. MacGregor Mathers and William Wynn Westcott, which in 1906 duly renamed it as the ROSICRUCIAN ORDER OF A∴O∴, a Order which was legitimately resurrected in Paris in 1993, authorized by two adepti Exempti in London, England. In 1998, our Temple along with another Swedish Temple, became authorized by an envoy from the Ahathôor Temple No. 7 in Paris which officially made it an ALPHA ET OMEGA Temple. Our new Mother Temple from 2014, has been raised on the foundations of our discontinued Temple from 1997.

With our Declamatio we also want to announce that our Order has taken the initiative, together with other related fraternities around the world, to found a international Confederation of independent and autonomous Temples and Fraternities. All members of this Rosicrucian Confederation are working along the lines of the Golden Dawn tradition specifically and in Hermetic, Qabalistic and Rosicrucian traditions in general, from a traditionalist ethos. Thus, only because we have formally severed all ties with our former international parent organization and renounced the counter-tradition, this does not etail that the H∴O∴N∴A∴ has isolated itself from the rest of the community; let it be known that our Order constitutes a link in a fraternal chain of several traditional Orders which extends far beyond our domestic HYPERBOREA.

Let it be known to our domestic HYPERBOREAN readers that the Mother Temple primarily recruits its members from the West of Sweden, the Regions Västra Götaland and Halland. Additionally, we require that our candidates undergo a period of probation before their admission as a member of the H∴O∴N∴A∴. Candidates who live elsewhere, and must travel long distances for their initiation, are offered studies by correspondence and training for distance members aministered by our Mother Temple, with opportunities for traditional initiation and instruction of the same high quality as that provided for our local members. I DETDeclamatio Fraternitatis som publicerades på Gyllene Gryningen under Vårdagjämningen 2014, utgörande ett manifest av Hermetiska Orden av Den Gryende Morgonrodnaden (H∴O∴G∴M+R), i vilket jag är Archon Basileus (högsta magistrat), deklarerades följande och som kommer att utgöra ämnet för denna essä angående den härkomst som vår Orden hävdar till Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn och Rosicrucian Order of Alpha Omega, med en förhoppning om att frågetecken om vår Ordens position i denna fråga kommer att rätas ut till utropstecken i denna ärliga och något utdragna redogörelse:

Vi är väl medvetna om att frågan om autentisk härkomst till Hermetic Order of the G∴D∴ och Rosicrucian Order of A∴O∴ är en akademiskt osäker fråga, som står under ständig förändring allt eftersom nya uppgifter framkommer i den seriösa forskningen. Den ursprungliga andliga härkomsten och esoteriska överföringen auktoriseras av en Adeptus Exemptus 7°=4° allena, vilket ursprungligen utgjordes av W. W. Westcott och S. L. MacGregor Mathers, och i ett senare skede av Moina Mathers, J. W. Brodie-Innes, Isabel Morgan Boyd, Dr. W. E. Carnegie-Dickson och Maiya Tranchell Hayes. Detta är vad vi med akademisk säkerhet kan säga, och som bekräftas i diverse publicerad litteratur författad av Ellic Howe, Robert A. Gilbert, Francis King och Ithell Colquhoun, et al.

Carnegie-Dickson utgjorde den siste i raden av dessa regelrätt installerade Adepti Exempti under den tid då G∴D∴ utgjorde en operativ kontinuerlig verksamhet. Efter att det sista A∴O∴ Templet hade stängts år 1939 överförde han enligt Tony Fuller sedermera denna härkomst till Hermes Templet någon gång under 1950-talet när han blev dess ledare, ett Tempel som formellt stängdes år 1972. Inget Tempel har till vår kännedom blivit auktoriserat av Carnegie-Dickson efter Hermes; inte heller känner vi till att han har överfört sin 7°=4° auktorisation till någon efterträdare. Några privilegiebrev existerar sålunda inte i G∴D∴ eller A∴O∴ efter 1972 och påstådda härkomster tillbaka till denna tradition är på sin höjd vaga och osäkra, då de till stor del baserar sig på anekdotisk kunskap, inte akademisk forskning. Dock måste här tilläggas att en esoteriskt överförd härkomst till G∴D∴ och A∴O∴ inte främst baserar sig på priviligiebrev utan på initiatorisk härkomst som överförs från en Adeptus Exemptus 7°=4° till en annan. 

Ithell Colquhoun utgör också en av källorna till druid-spåretvilket bekräftas och substantiellt har utvecklats av en muntlig tradition som härstammar från Desmond Bourke och som har förmedlats vidare till oss genom Jean-Pascal Ruggiu och David Griffin. Denna gör gällande att Nauda Templet grundades år 1916 av Ärke-Druiden George Watson MacGregor Reid (1862?–1946) som en hybrid mellan Golden Dawn och den druidiska traditionen, som praktiskerade Golden Dawn ritualer (både Yttre och Inre Orden) vid sidan av keltiska ritualer i Chapman, London. MacGregor Reid hade inlett denna syntes över ett decennium tidigare med MacGregor Mathers efter att ha grundat An Uileach Druidh Braithreachas (The Druid Universal Bond) och givit  MacGregor Mathers titeln som Ärke-Druid. Den senare gav Reid titeln ”MacGregor” som frukten av detta samarbete tillsammans med Graden Adeptus Exemptus och således rätten att grunda Tempel och förätta Grader inom Golden Dawns tradition. 

Desmond Bourke (1918–2005) initierades upp till Adeptus Maximus (motsvarande 7°=4°) i av Madeline Montalban (d. 1982) 1956 grundadeOrder of the Morning Star, eller Ordo Stella Matutina, vilket hade en härkomst till Hermes Templet i Bristol och fortfarande existerar idag, samtidigt som han såsom en hög dignitär inom den brittiska druidrörelsen och även besatt en genuin Alpha Omega härkomst såsom  7°=4° genom G.W. MacGregor Reid. Bourke var även en Magus (IX°) i S.R.I.A. och aktiv i dess senare version av Waites Fellowship of the Rosy Cross, där han erhöll Graden Magister Templi (8°=3°) direkt efter antagning som ett erkännande av hans samlade härkomster inom Golden Dawns tradition. Denna information, vilket delvis kan bekräftas av oberoende källor, har kommit till oss muntligen genom Robert Word, Jean-Pascal Ruggiu och David Griffin. Denna muntliga tradition förtäljer dock mer.

Enligt denna återuppväckte Jean-Pascal Ruggiu(1954–) tillsammans med Nicholas Tereschenko (1920–2001) (som också var Adeptus Maximus i Montalbans Order of the Morning Star), år 1992 MacGregor Mathers gamla Ahathôor Tempel No. 7, vilket var Alpha Omega-Ordens ursprungliga Modertempel, efter en resa till Bristol, England, där de båda träffade Robert Andrew Gilbert (1942–), arkivarie i S.R.I.A. och en av de mest ansedda forskarna inom Golden Dawns historia, och av honom erhöll Ahathôor-templets gamla mötesprotokoll. Ruggiu och Tereschenko invigdes till Adeptus Exemptus 1993 i Serapis Templet i London. Under denna befordran var Apollon Leontas Imperator och Desmond Bourke Praemonstrator över Serapis Templet av Ancient Magical Order of the Golden Dawn, den senare som genom sin person överförde legitima härkomster från Stella Matutina, Alpha Omega och A.E. Waites Fellowship of the Rosy Cross till Adepti Exempti Tereschenko och Ruggiu. Med sig till Paris hade de även med sig en formell auktorisation att driva det nyss återupplivade Ahathôor-templet inom ramen för Ordre Rosicrucien de l’Alpha et Omega. Vid sidan av Tereschenko och Ruggiu fick även amerikanen Robert Word emottaga 7°=4° Graden Adeptus Exemptus i Serapis Templet, den Grad inom Golden Dawns tradition som bemyndigar Adepten att kunna grunda ett Tempel inom traditionen. Med denna auktorisation grundade Robert Word således en ny Orden i Amerika som kallade sig August Order of the Mystic Rose (A.O.M.R.). Denna Orden blev affilerad med Ahatoor Templet No. 7 i Paris och verkade som dess representant i den Nya Världen.

Även om vi medger att Bourke-linjens härkomst till G∴D∴ och A∴O∴ inte går att bevisa med dokumentation eller andra oberoende sagesmän och att det görs starka försök att vederlägga den (dock med politiska förtecken snarare än akademiska), utgör den samtidigt den mest intressanta såväl som legitima av dem alla i egenskap av Graden Adeptus Exemptus 7°=4°. Dock är varken Bourke eller hans initiator längre med oss och de tog hemligheten med sig i graven; i brist på substantiella bevis som kan vederlägga Bourkes påståenden väljer vi att lita på våra sagesmän och initiatorer, vilket är kutym i esoteriska sammanhang, och tro på den muntliga tradition som traditionellt har förmedlats till oss och som vi här återger till fullo. 

Nauda Templet omnämns och beskrivs dock i Colquhouns eminenta MacGregor Mathers-biografi  Sword of Wisdom (1975). Ithell Colquhoun (1906–1988) (se fotografi ovan till höger) var en praktiserande ockultist inom Golden Dawn-traditionen och en framstående medlem av Tamara Bourkouns Order of the Pyramid and the Sphinx, ett Golden Dawn-baserat sällskap som även omfattade Ruggiuoch Tereschenko som medlemmar. Det som är intressant med Colquhoun och som gör henne så trovärdig som källa är att hon var kusin till Edward John Langford Garstin (1893–1955), en av det Moina Mathers grundade Isis Templets ledare, och själv stod under hans handledarskap. Detta faktum gör att Colquhoun stod närmare den högsta hierarkien i Rosicrucian Order of the A∴O∴ (vilket var den enda autentiska kontinuiteten av Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn) än någon annan modern eller postmodern författare om Golden Dawns historia. Detta är vad hon skrev i sin Sword of Wisdom om dessa förhållanden (på sidorna 117-128& 246): 
Mystified by certain resemblances in structure and wording between the Druid-rituals and those of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, I once asked Dr. Robert A. F. MacGregor Reid, late Chosen Chief of An Uileach Druidh Braithreachas (= The Druid Universal Bond) what connection there was between the two fraternities. He replied: ‘Doesn’t it occur to you that the Druid Order is the survivor of the Golden Dawn?’ Later he passed on to me the rumour of a more intriguing survival, that of ‘a very strict GD Lodge [Nauda Temple] in the Regent’s Park area working in the manner of the Jesuits’, though he was unable to discover more about it.

This Temple [Nauda] operated in Clapham, S.W.4, and a photograph of its interior exists (or until recently existed) showing the Hierophant’s Throne, the Altar and the Two Pillars. Ariovistus [Robert A. F. MacGregor Reid] told me that ‘the Sanctuary’, which I gathered was another structure within the temple, was then in the possession of a Unitarian minister unwilling to surrender it. Was this Sanctuary a Vault of the Adepts, on the orthodox GD model, for the use of Nauda’s Second Order initiates?

A Vault was housed [by Nauda] (though not used since the 1930′s) at Narbonne Road, S.E., until some twenty years later at least.

G. W. MacGregor Reid was the Archbishop of a Universalist (Culdee) Church with which Nauda had a close connection, both spiritual and geographical.

On the occasion of the GD Schism of 1900, according to Amenophis, the Grove of Mount Haemus [An Uileach Druidh Braithreachas] stood aside from controversy in an attempt to avoid the consequent dissensions and splinterings. It had lost many supporters to the GD in the latter’s hey-day and they did not return, though many now left the Golden Dawn also. By 1907 Mount Haemus had severed its last links; this date, or one soon after it, may indicate the founding of Nauda even if this was a revival of some differently-named and earlier Temple. I suspect that a certain amount of pre-Schism material came to it through Charles Rosher, though Nauda apparently owed something also to A. E. Waite: the colours of the regalia in An Uileach Druidh Braithreachas’s Ovate Og [0°=0°] ceremony are those prescribed for Officers in Waite’s Fellowship of the Rosy Cross…

What An Uileach Druidh Braithreachas works as inner ritual it probably took over from Nauda.

By 1953 the Druid Order had a threefold structure in the Golden Dawn tradition:

A Third or Innermost Order, The Mound-Builders–also called the Hendeka so presumably consisting of eleven members–styled Druids. This claimed direct descent from the Grove of Antiquity, Mount Haemus; the tradition of the Hendeka is associated with Mount Haemus from its earliest years;

A Second or Inner Order, An Uileach Druidh Braithreachas properly so called, the members being styled Chaired Bards and having passed the 5°=6° Grade (Adeptus Minor in the GD);

The First or Outer Order, which had adopted the name of A.O.D.H. (Mrs. Ansell’s Ancient Order of the Druid Hermetists), the members being of Grades 1°=10° to 4°=7° and styled Bards.
Outside of this, the Central Collage of Mount Haemus ran a correspondence course of three ‘Steps’ for scattered members who were styled ovates; it seems that candidates had to pass through this course before presenting themselves for the First Order.

Detta brev som är skrivet till en okänd ”Frater” (troligtivs någon nyfiken broder i S.R.I.A. eller Fellowship of the Rosy Cross där man kallar sig för ”Frater” istället för ”Brother”) och daterar sig självt till ”15/10/03,” dvs. exakt ett decennium efter att omnämnda trio blev initierade i Adeptus Exemptus-graden 7°=4° och fick alla överföringar till G∴D∴ och A∴O∴ från Desmond Bourke med sig på köpet, vilket sedermera överfördes till undertecknad och H∴O∴G∴M+R genom David Griffins, Jean-Pascal Ruggius och Robert Words händer. Bourkes brev publicerades delvis som en inskannad kopia först år 2013 enligt följande:


Den  inskannade första sidan av Desmond Bourkes brev dök upp på Internet först vid vintersolståndet 2013, troligtvis som en svar på nyheten om att H∴O∴G∴M+R formellt hade avskiljt sig från R∴O∴A∴O∴. Publiceringen av denna inskannade version (vilket saknar en hel sida) föregicks av spridningen av en transkription vilket dök upp för första gången år 2006, vilket vi återger här i sin fulla och ursprungliga form:
Dear Frater,

Thank you for your letter dated 6th October.

My memory is bad (I am now over 85) but I will try and help. One thing is certain: I’ve never had any contact with the Hermes Temple in Bristol.

However, your reference to Felkin struck a note. I think Richard Jac de Palatine made such a claim regarding the Order of the True Rosy Cross: though he also claims to have received that Order from America.

As you know I have done some research. Firstly regarding Martinism and secondly about Yarker, both involving Richard. The first led ultimately to the formation of a Martinist Lodge by me, John Emerson, David Walker, and others which led to the formation of the Hermetic Order of Martinists.

The second led to me acquiring a number of “charters” and things which I wanted for my research and to illustrate my work. However, after I had acquired a large amount of material, I was pre-empted by another study and lost interest. It is these so-called “charters” which may have led to confusion as some included “The  Order of the True Rosy Cross” and recipients may claim to have received an authority from me, which I did not and could not give.

Three friends from that time may have had my “charters”: – John Fitzpatrick, Howard Doe, and Apollon (?spelling?).

John F. is inaccurate. Howard Doe has also received the same sort of things (some but not all through me) from Dr. Crow including he claims the Ancient and Arcane Order of the Rosy Cross. Both have contacts in France.

Apollon was a member of an active group and expressed interest in my charters. I told him he could have one but do not remember if he accepted the offer, and if he did I do not remember if I wrote a covering letter or MS. I went to one of his meetings in the Neophyte Grade conducted by a lady whose name I forget. I met Pat Zalewski and the one who went to Australia once or perhaps twice in the company of John F. and Howard Doe.

In my time the True Rosy Cross has only met as a Study Group and not conferred any grades but if I or they did, it could only be valid within that Order. In my opinion initiation can only be conferred by someone who has himself received it in person, which is why I might & could only say that the True Rosy Cross is in the G.D. Tradition or system.

I brevet påstås Bourke säga att ”Apollon [Leontas] var medlem i en aktiv grupp och uttryckte ett intresse för mina priviligiebrev. Jag hälsade honom att han kunde få ett…”, vilket kan vara en hänvising till Serapis Templet men inte alls behöver vara det. Det som talar emot att detta är en hänvisning till Serapis är att Bourke i brevet knyter sina ”priviligiebrev” till frimuraren John Yarker, vilket var något av en handelsman i härkomster till ytterhetsfrimureriska system, exempelvis det rosenkorsiska Memphis-Misraïmsystemet. Yarker hade inget med Golden Dawn-traditionen att göra. Så vad Bourke beskriver är att han gav ett priviligiebrev som härstammade från Yarker och troligtvis handlade om något obskyrt frimureriskt rosenkorssystem.

Något annat som talar emot att privilegiebrevet är en hänvisning till Serapis och Ancient Magical Order of the Golden Dawn är följande påstående att Bourke ”gick till ett av hans [Leontas] möten i Neofytgraden som leddes av en kvinna vars namn jag har glömt”. Denna ständiga hänvisning till sitt dåliga minne är kuriöst med tanke på att han ett decennium tidigare beskrivs av Robert Word såsom varande mycket skärpt och lätt till hågkomsten att i minsta detalj återge alla fakta rörande sina Golden Dawn-härkomster, vilket dessutom bekräftades av de övriga ledarna i Serapis Templet. Dessutom har trion av Adepti Exempti Tereschenko, Ruggiu och Word intygat att Bourke var Praemonstrator i Templet och att han hade en omfattande korrespondens med samtliga av dem under en period. Antingen ger Bourke en referens till en annan organisation eller så försöker han medvetet att vara mycket diskret angående sina härkomster till denne nyfikne frimurar-broder.

Ingenstans i detta brev kan vi utläsa några bevis för att Desmond Bourke skulle förneka sina Golden Dawn-relaterade härkomster, utan endast att han har svårt att minnas detaljerna kring vissa av sina härkomster och hurvida de relaterar till Golden Dawn eller inte, vilket han alltså ett decennium tidigare har kunnat göra utan problem muntligen till dem som har emottagit dem. I brevet är Bourke medvetet vag som om han försöker sopa igen spåren till sina Golden Dawn-härkomster. I brevet antyder han om att en överföring av en härkomst har skett bl.a. till Appolon Leontas. Vi kan dock inte utläsa av brevet exakt vilka dessa härkomster är. Ingenting här i brevet säger att dessa ens har något med G∴D∴ eller A∴O∴ att göra. De enda ordenssällskap som nämns har ”Rosy Cross” i sina namn, inte ”Golden Dawn” eller ”Alpha Omega” vilket har hävdats av belackarna. Vad man kan utläsa av Bourkes ord är att han förnekar sin rätt att förmedla ett priviligiebrev för “The  Order of the True Rosy Cross”, en högst irrelevant grupp i sammanhanget.

Ett senare argument, vilket har kommit i samband med uppkomsten av den inskannade första sidan av Bourkes brev, är publiceringen av ett brev från Robert Word daterat ”June 24, 1994,” där han klargör vissa detaljer angående Serapis Templet och härkomsterna som överfördes där till Tereschenko, Ruggiu och Word ett år tidigare. Låt oss citera relevanta delar från detta brev:
The English conferral was inter-Order rather than Intra-Order; thus I received the degree as a visiting Head of an Order [August Order of the Mystic Rose] rather than as a Student of the previous Order [Ancient Magical Order of the Golden Dawn]. The intent of the conferral was to transmit the authorities of the 7=4 grade as received through the four Orders or lineages: 1) The Stella Matutina; 2) The Secret college of SRIA; 3) The Order of the Sacred Word; 4) The Traditional Golden Dawn Order. The combination of the various lineages is due to the ubiquitous activities of a certain Initiate [Desmond Bourke] in the various Bodies. Since the Initiates whom I contacted are impeccably connected with the various Inner Orders and Occult Schools, and connection with them reached me through numerous channels independently, I have not the slightest doubt of the veracity, on their own terms, of their claims…

For the present, without quoting names without permission, I shall simply state that Frater A. [Bourke] received the 7=4 in the Stella Matutina; that he was a member of the Hermes Temple which closed in 1972; that he is in possession of the original warrants of Dr. Felkin; that he is a member of the SRIA and the Secret Collage of the SRIA; that he formerly governed access to the manuscripts room in the British Library; that he is Druid; that he holds Charters also for the Rite of Memphis in Britain; that he is recognised as an Initiate by the Heads of various occult Orders in Europe. G.H. Frater A. was a member of, and actually at the head of, quite a number of Occult Orders in Britain, and was active in several Golden Dawn type Orders. Then in the early 1980’s, G.H. Frater A. ceremoniously conferred the grade of 7=4, in combined lineages cited above, upon a certain G.H Frater B. [Apollon Leontas], who was himself never at any time a member of the Stella Matutina, but who had forumlated independently a successful Occult Order working along Golden Dawn lines [Ancient Magical Order of the Golden Dawn]. Thus, Frater A. intended to transmit the full authorities of the Grade of 7=4 which he had aquired in the  Stella Matutina and elsewhere on Frater B.
Then in 1993 G. H. Frater B ceremonially conferred the Grade of 7=4 on me, with the intent of transmitting simultaneously the authorities of the four lineages cited above.
The same lineages were transmitted at the same time to the Chiefs [Nicholas Tereschenko & Jean-Pascal Ruggiu] of at third Temple [Ahathôor] located in another country [Frankrike]. Thus, at the present there are three Temples [Serapis, Ahathoor & A.O.M.R.], in the three countries [England, Frankrike & USA], which share fraternal relations and lineage. This of course includes the Temple with which I am presently working.
Vi har identifierat de olika personer, ordenssällskap och länder som logiken dikterar oss, även om vi inte kan vara helt säkra. Om ”G.H. Frater A.” verkligen är Desmond Bourke så framställer sig en motsägelse i förhållande till det påstådda brevet från Bourke som vi citerade ovan, avseende hans påstående att ”En sak är säker: Jag har aldrig haft någon kontakt med Hermestemplet i Bristol”. Om vi utgår ifrån att det påstådda brevet från Bourke skrevs av honom själv och att det är korrekt att identifiera ”Frater A.” med honom så är det uppenbart att han har ljugit antingen till den mystiske ”Fratern” som han har adresserat brevet till eller till Robert Word. Vi vet inte vem Bourke skriver till och hur nära honom han står, eller inom vilken ordenskontext de kommunicerar; vi vet dock vem Robert Word är och inom vilken kontext han har haft relation till Bourke, nämligen den som emottagare av en autentisk härkomst från en Adeptus Exemptus till en annan. Word noterar själv angående detta till undertecknad drygt 20 år senare:
I spoke directly with Desmond Bourke in London in September of 1993, and he acknowledged to me at that time that he possessed 4 (four) distinct lineages of the Golden Dawn, with authorities to confer the Grades of the Order.
En dylik härkomst är inget man pratar med vem som helst om, ty den är förseglad av stängaste tystnadsförpliktelser, i alla fall om man är traditionellt hågad och vi vet att engelsmännen vid den här tiden var mycket traditionella och är det ännu idag. En bärare av en såpass exalterad härkomst har inget att vinna på att ljuga om sin härkomst eftersom han inte kan tala om den med särskilt många och mycket sällan förmedlar den vidare till andra. Hög ålder är en god anledning att lämna över facklan till en ny generation Adepter och vid Words, Ruggius och Tereschenkos befodran till 7°=4° var Bourke över 75 år gammal (han skulle endast leva 11 år till). Däremot har han desto större anledning att ljuga åt någon som inte har något att göra med vilka härkomster han besitter, vilket uppenbart frågeställaren som Bourke skriver till inte har.

De fyra särskiljda härkomsterna som Robert Word nämner i sin kommentar från 2014 är uppenbarligen en hänvisning till de fyra som han nämner i sitt brev från 1994. ”The Secret Collage of the S.R.I.A.” är garanterat en hänvisning till A. E. Waites The Fellowship of the Rosy Cross vilket återupplivades av en inre cirkel av Fratres i S.R.I.A. år 1968 på initiativ av sin Supreme Magus W.R. Semken, vilket besatt en legitim härkomst till Waites Order som hade avecklats år 1942. Det är väl känt att Bourke hade högsta Graden i S.R.I.A. och att han även var med i Waites återupplivade Fellowship. Hänvisningen till ”The Order of the Sacred Word” är dock mer oklar. Det har existerat ett sällskap med detta namn mellan åren 1957 och 1971, vilket härstammade från Ordo Aurum Solis och arbetade med den s.k. ”ogdoatiska traditionen”. Ithell Colquhoun skriver följande om The Hermetic Order of the Sacred Word i Sword of Wisdom (på sidorna 197-198):
The Hermetic Order of the Sacred Word appeared recently in London claiming descent from the Stella Matutina; one would suppose it to have come through Merlin [ett Stella Matutina Tempel som grundades av R. W. Felkin, likaväl som Modertemplet Amoun] but this was denied. The only remaining alternative is that it is derived from scattered remnants of Amoun–if in fact its SM affiliation is genuine. Its moving spirit was a Doctor of Music named Roger Hunt who was at one time closely linked with the dissident Bardic and Druid Order, several adherents belonging to both organisations. The Sacred Word met at the Bardic and Druid Order’s premises and wore the same type of robe and head-dress. It had a chequered career with several upheavals and shifts in leadership, during the course of which it changed its name to the Order of the Light and of the Darkness. It severed relations with the Bardic and Druid Order, itself a dissident from A.D.U.B. [An Druidh Uileach Braithreachas]; then essayed a return to source by amalgamating itself with the A.D.U.B. under Dr. Thomas Maughan. This alliance was short-lived and I understand that the darkness has now overcome the light.
Det som belackarna belyser i Words brev, skriven ett år efter hans befordran till 7°=4° är att den helt saknar några referenser till MacGregor Mathers Rosicrucian Order of A∴O∴, och att denna härkomst till A∴O∴ genom Bourke och från G. W. MacGregor Reids Nauda Temple skulle vara en senare ”fabrikation” som i synnerhet har framhållits av Tereschenko och Ruggiu i samband med återuppväckelsen av Ahathôor Templet No. 7 och Ordre Rosicrucien de l’Alpha & Omega. Vad belackarna missar är dock hänvisningen till ”The Traditional Golden Dawn Order”. Vad annars är detta än en hänvisning till det ursprungliga Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn grundat och lett av W. W. Westcott och S. L. MacGregor Mathers? Det är ett faktum att den senare referensen till ”Rosicrucian Order of A∴O∴”  endast utgjorde ett namnbyte inom en och samma Orden, som fortfarande leddes av MacGregor Mathers och Westcott efter 1906, det år då namnbytet blev ett faktum. 

Sålunda är orden ”Golden Dawn” och ”Alpha Omega” synonymer och brukliga för samma Orden som hade en kontinuerlig existens i England från 1888 och ända fram tills Andra Världskrigets utbrott. I kontrast till detta är det brukligt att göra referenser till Stella Satutina såsom en egen Orden, distinkt från G∴D∴ och A∴O∴, vilket inte är att förundras över då Stella Matutina schismerade från Orden, då känd såsom ”Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn”, redan år 1900. Observera också att Robert Word i brevet räknar upp en specifik härkomst till ”The Stella Matutina” vid sidan av ”The Traditional Golden Dawn Order”.

Om Desmond Bourke var ärlig till Robert Word angående alla sina härkomster, vilket vi inte har någon anledning att betvivla, och Word hade uppfattat det på ett korrekt sätt att Bourke var initierad till 7°=4° i Hermes-templet, så innebär detta att han därigenom emottog en ytterligare genuin härkomst till G∴D∴ och A∴O∴, vid sidan av Nauda-templets, eftersom Dr. W. Sammanfattningsvist ger detta en något oklar bild om vår Ordens härkomster tillbaka till Hermetic Order of the G∴D∴ och Rosicrucian Order of A∴O∴ utifrån en rent akademisk synvinkel; dock måste vi komma ihåg att esoteriska härkomster och överföringar till sin natur är en ljusskygg historia och att de traditionellt inte får utgöra ett ämne för akademisk forskning. Denna situation är sålunda typisk för alla andra ordenssällskap som hävdar någon form av autentisk härkomst tillbaka till G∴D∴. Det är nu upp till läsaren att själv avgöra trovärdigheten i detta utifrån vår egen återgivna berättelse.

Some new tidbit historical information regarding the druid connection to the Golden Dawn

I would like to share some historical tidbits with the gentle reader, as today Pat Zalewski, doing yet another round of lineage debunking over at the Watcher of the Dawn anonymous hate blog, inadvertitly succeeded in giving yet some more credence to the druid track of the G∴D∴ / A∴O∴.  In response to my previous blog Is there even such a thing as a Golden Dawn linege?, he wrote the following:
What we do know is that Reid’s secretary was a former 5=6 GD member and once or twice there were some GD rituals performed at Druidic celebratory times of the year. These were short lived.
Now, isn’t it highly interesting to know that the personal secretary of G. W. MacGregor Reid (the guy in the picture) was in fact a former 5°=6° of the G∴D∴! And that Mr. Zalewski furthermore confirms that there in fact were G∴D∴ rituals being performed in a druidic context! I personally wasn’t aware of the historical curiosity that the secretary of Reid being a former Golden Dawn Adept. My gratitude goes out to Mr. Zalewski!

Well to me this fact isnt particularly strange considering the claim made of MacGregor Reid being a 7°=4° regularly advanced by S.L. MacGregor Mathers. His personal secretary being a 5°=6° gives more credence to the original claim; it only comes naturally to select a fellow Frater of the Tradition. That Golden Dawn rituals were performed together with druidry were no news to me personally, neither to my gentle reader.

Mr. Zalewski furthermore wrote: 
The possibility of Nauda temple was brought up in the Sword of Wisdom as having a noted British Politician involved. His biographer who went over all his papers found no reference to it.
Not that strange actually considering that Nauda was a secret Temple, as it was working under the aegis of the G∴D∴ / A∴O∴. Strange however why this obvious detail didnt come across Mr. Zalewskis mind.
What this all comes down to is that Tomas claims he was told this twaddle and he has taken it as gospel without doing any independent research to check it out.
Actually, over the years and also quite recently, I have had very interesting and highly trustworthy people, renowned historians with strong links to both the British and Pacific occult scene, contacting me and lamenting the way in which Bourke has been portraited by Mr. Zalewski, vindicating his well deserved status in the British islands as a key occult player, as well as the druidic element in later G∴D∴ / A∴O∴ history. These individuals have preferred to share information with me in strictest confidentially, which is why I cannot reveal their identities nor any detailed information regarding their sources or presented facts. Lets say that it is more to this story than some individuals, such as Mr. Zalewski, wants my gentle reader to believe. I am quite confident that the information that I have presented represents the facts.

However, in my previous blog essay I also stated that facts regarding lineage can be a bit sketchy and if any new information comes to light that actually makes some of what I have stated outdated, I will be happy to make due changes to my future presentation. Leonard Stevens aka Jean de Cabalis, provided such information today, which I will present here and that I find plausible:
The Adeptus Maximus of Madeline Montalban is nothing like, nor being equivalent to the Golden Dawn 7=4 grade. Madeline Montalban correspondence course had a 22 degree grade system based upon the Tarot which during the course, various titles/grades were honoured. 0-0 being neophyte, 0-1 the Magician, 0-2 High Priestess. Montalban also refers to most persons doing the correspondence course will get as far as completing the ‘Adeptus Miniums’ [sic.] grade of the OMS.
Desmond Bourke may of completed the entire 22 degree OMS correspondence course and got awarded the Adeptus Maximus grade, but the grades of the OMS are not grades in the meaning of Golden Dawn initiatory grades and cannot be compared. It is like comparing apples with oranges.
To be honest, I have felt somewhat reluctant to believe in any connection between Motalban’sMorning Star and that of Felkins Stella Matutina. Now, Mr. Stevens has convinced me that any such connection, although possible, is highly unlikely. It probably stems from a misunderstanding of Motalbans system, which Mr. Stevens has now cleared up, something that I am utterly grateful for. I have also made changes to the information accordingly on Gryendemorgonrodnaden.com and on my previous blog post.

Now, in closing, Mr. Zalewski is welcome to comment on the Gyllene Gryningen blog directly, instead of using a highly suspectible proxy such as Watcher. We already know that he is an ardent follower of the Gyllene Gryningen blog and even takes the effort of translating my Swedish into garbled English, which is more than I expect from most of my English readers. Thank you.

Addendum 2014-03-25

One of the distinguished historians on occult history which I mentioned above who supports my view on the druidic element of the G∴D∴ / A∴O∴, and who still wishes to remain anonymous considering the current inflammatory state of the Golden Dawn Community in handling controversal truths, provided me with some highly interesting information in response to this blog post. He authorized me to use this information, for the benefit of my gentle reader, and I will paraphrase him accordingly.

According to him the Cromlech Temple of the Sun Order held druidic festival rituals at Beltane, and also Circle rituals (which I surmise is a reference to Stonehenge), the senior Officer of both these occurances holding the title of The Arch Druid”. Both the Beltane and Circle rituals had existed from the late 1890s, this informant states, and the fact remains that S.L. MacGregor Mathers was a member of the Sun Order. As the Archon Basileus of the A∴O∴, there is no doubt that MacGregor Mathers would have officiated as the Arch Druid when he performed these rituals, and my reliable informant is convinced that he did perform them. Furthermore, it is his view that Ithell Coquhoun had picked up information from her initiated contacts, some of whom where conscious about the link back to Cromlech Temple and the Sun Order, which is evident from reading her Sword of Wisdom

For me it is highly intersting as my own initiatory and esoteric transmittors affirmed to me that S. L. MacGregor Mathers and G. W. MacGregor Reid had swapped lineges between theAn Uileach Druidh Braithreachas (The Druid Universal Bond) and the Rosicrucian Order of A∴O∴, somewhere in time when it shed its former name Hermetic Order of the GD, making the former a Arch Druid and the latter an Adeptus Exemptus. The Adeptus Exemptus pertains to the highest office of the A∴O∴, being the Chief Adept and Archon Basileus, in the same manner as the Arch Druid serves as the Chief Office of the Druidic Mysteries.

A honest peace offering

Following my declaration of independence and credo I have received much support and encouragement, both officially and unofficially, both high and low, from many different corners of the community. However, as is the nature of all things of this temporal existence, there is always a back side to everything. Thus, I have also drawn some quite severe reactions and negative attention, especially from people which I have polemicisedwith in the past, such as Nick Farrell and Pat Zalewski. The latest round of contention has revolved around my lineages, which I have addressed lately on the Gyllene Gryningen blog. The main vehicle for this polemic has been the anonymous Watcher of the Dawn blog, who has set itself to reveal the lies of occult leaders”. In a previous blog post addressing the latest eruption coming from Mr. Zalewski, I wrote the following:
I guess, becoming or being a “Golden Dawn leader” makes you an open target from all camps, including the spiritual family that you have once abandoned. I suppose it comes with the territory. But my suggestion to all of you Golden Dawn leaders who feel threatened by my recent actions, or have an ax to grind with me because of past dealings, is very simple: Just stay away from my path and leave me alone. I have no interest in you or your work; we have so little in common that there is no need to feel competition from my side, as we are not even reaching out to the same people with our respecive operations. My ideal candidate is not that of yours. So, let us simply ignore each other and continue with our respective visions of the Great Work. I believe that I have said enough concerning my views regarding that of the general Golden Dawn Community; I have no need to repeat myself. I especially have no ambition to name call anyone or assassinate anyones character. (2014-03-09)
I still stand by these words. Now for the last couple of days I have actually started a dialogue with Mr. Zalewski over at the Watcher of the Dawn blog, probably the first since almost six years ago when I had my first encounter with him on a yahoo-group. But my first encounter back then was not a fraternal one. Now six years later it seems that the time is finally ripe for a true dialoge in a more civil manner. It started with Mr. Zalewski asking me the following two days ago:
SR has accused me in the past of doing what he and his group have done and he could bring it here to the watchers site for analysis. I would be only to happy to answer any GD history questions that SR has that I have some how pulled the wool peoples eyes – just as long as they are specific and not generic questions.
My answer to him was published the very next day:
Dear Pat, I have no personal interest in “debunking” any of your lineages, or whatever. If I ever have, that belongs to my past, and I have no interest in devolving back into that kind of mentality. In leaving the HOGD/A+O and the general GD Community, I have tried to distance myself from all of the negativity associated with my former allegiance and with blogs such as the Watcher. Please respect that all I want is peace and to do the Work here with my own Order.
To this Mr. Zalewski responded promptly and in a tone that airs some kind of tentative hopefullness:
If SR wants peace then I am all for that, and he can start taking down his accusation blogs from the “old days: Unfortunately while still clinging to the Bourke lineage and the Bourkon lineage as a source he gives little back as a peace offering. I am an historian, or that is what my Master of Philosophy is in, and I will not overlook concocted GD history that is totally unproven.
To this I responded the very same day and with sincerity in my heart:
Pat, I like the idea of a sanitation of my blog. To show you my good will, I will publish a blog about it, and invite you or anyone else who has felt accused by me in the past, to point out which exact blogs you want to be removed or sanitized, or reedited. However, you cannot ask me to ignore my past and the transmissions that I have received, including oral history. If I am about to censor my blog I expect an end to the name calling. But I will take the initiative and remove the ‘Truth about Pat Zalewski…’ blog, right away.
And I kept my word and took away that original blog post which has been one of the roots for the contentions between me an Mr. Zalewski for the last six years. His anwswer came today and filled my heart with hope of a peaceful co-existance:
ok you have a deal
Now I have fulfilled my end of the bargain, removed the first post that I immediately understood qualified as a accusation blog”. Following this first peace initiative I have now set up this blog in its stead so that anyone, and in particular Mr. Zalewski and Mr. Farrell, may post requests here on the comments section. Anyone else who have felt targeted by me somehow may also post comments. Just specify what blog post you want to have removed, censored or re-edited. I will try to accomodate you all to the best of my ability, and according to the severity of my previous blog posts, either delete them entirely, or re-edit them to make them appear more tempered and less severe.

However, I must make this abundantly clear: I will not retract from my Traditionalist position on the mysteries and on my analysis of the General Golden Dawn Community, using the Traditionalist School as my frame work. There is and probably will always be an abyss between us as our outlook on the Tradition and such fundamental views as lineage and teachings are and will be in oppositon. Thus you cannot expect me to change my views on these matters. One such example is how S.L. MacGregor Mathers has been treated in the past. I still stand by my opinion and in opposition to the views held by both Mr. Zalewski and Mr. Farrell. I am currently planning to remove these blog posts as well but then again to use the greater bulk of these texts to re-edit and reformat them into a new pdf-document for download over at the Gryendemorgonrodnaden.com web page. In this new form I will take away any unecessary name calling and alleviate the severity of the tone of my exposition. However, I still believe that the main message needs to be accessed by the public as a counter-balance to the views currently held by Mr. Zalewski and Mr. Farrell on Golden Dawn history. These has to be addressed in their specifics.

However, what you can expect of me is that, exept for the re-edit of the MacGregor Mathers apology, I will not focus on this anymore in the future. All that have been said concerning this matter has been said already, both in a general and specific way. Also, if I do address these topics again, I will try to uphold the policy of not naming anyone in particular, only addressing things in a general way, especially in future blog posts. Me leaving the Golden Dawn Flame Wars and previous alliances, means that I have left my preoccupation with other Orders and their leaders, such as Mr. Zalewski and Mr. Farrell. It doesnt mean that I have forgotten my roots. In my opinion the community, including my former Order, has went to far astray and thus it becomes important for me to search back to the roots of the Tradition. My leaving my former Order and all of the War of the Roses was based upon an inner realisation, a spiritual necessity. My advice to both of these gentlemen is the following: 
Leave your obssesion with other Orders and their leaders!
Perhaps my olive branch is the first step in the right direction which will make it easier for Mr. Zalewski and Mr. Farrell to leave me and my new Order, the Hermetic Order of the Nascent Aurora (H∴O∴N∴A∴) alone and to its own devices, to do the Work in peace, once and for all. Like I said in the quotations above, all I want is being freed from all of the unecessary distractions, all of the previous Order politics associated with my former allegience. I know that I have a responsibility for my past actions in this respect, and this blog post is my first effort to repair and to make amends. But the door swings both ways, as they say. I expect something back in return.

For me name calling has two meanings. The first one is obvious, and that is to use denigratory, slanderous and offensive words against someones person. The other aspect is to call out someones name, i.e. target a person directly by mentioning him by his name. I believe that the best conduct for us all in the future, especially on the Internet, is not to mention each other at all by name, not even referring directly to our respective organisations. There are obvious exceptions to this, such as in writing a review of Mr. Farrells books I have to mention the title and the name of the author. Mr. Farrell is of course fully entitled to respond to my reviews as well, calling out my name. But standard name calling is totally uncalled for, which has been done from both camps, and thus that is why I will re-edit these reviews and present them in a new and sanitized format. I expect the same from my detractors.

My terms are the following, for me to be able to proceed with this peace process: Anyone of you may have any opinions that you want, concerning anything that I have stated or claimed. You have all the right to address and criticize my ideas. What I ask specifically from you, however, is that you from this day and henceforth (a) stop referring to me directly (as S∴R∴, Sincerus Renatus or as Tomas Stacewicz), or to my Order, the H∴O∴N∴A∴. Do not character assassinate the messenger, but please counter argument against the position or the thought system of that message, in a more general way, and if specifics are mentioned, please be a sport and do not mention me at all. This is my primary request which is a condition for me to proceed any further with this peace initiative.

Furthermore, as my secondary request and because of my willingness, and measures already taken, to sanitize my previous postings, I expect you to dolikewise, viz. to (b)sanitize your own previous postings, messages and comments on the Internet, which directly mentions my name or the name of my current Order, either deleting in its entire, or to re-edit them so as to remove any slanderous name calling, or even better removing any references to me and my Order. This is all that I ask from you, the secondary request having a lower priority compared to the first, which is essential to fulfill my own obligations. Now I have taken the first necessary steps. An International Confederation of independent Temples and Fraternities

IN THE ENDING of the Declamatio Fraternitatis it was said thus: “With our Declamatio we also want to announce that our Order has taken the initiative, together with other kindred fraternities around the world, to found an international Confederation of independent and autonomous Temples and Fraternities. All members of this Rosicrucian Confederation are working along the lines of the Golden Dawn tradition specifically and in Hermetic, Qabalistic and Rosicrucian traditions in general, from a traditionalist ethos. Thus, only because we have formally severed all ties with our former international parent organization and renounced the counter-tradition, this does not entail that the H∴O∴N∴A∴ has isolated itself from the rest of the community; let it be known that our Order constitutes a link in a fraternal chain of several traditional Orders which extends far beyond our domestic Hyperborea.”

The Dark Night of the Soul, Initiation and Magic

ONE MAY hear today that it is impossible to experience the Dark Night of the Soul as a Magician or Theurgist, who contrary to a genuine Mystic supposedly doesnt renounce the material world. However, my own experience and the experiences of other initiates proves beyond any doubt that it is possible and even constitutes a requirement to become a successful Magician or Adept. Thus a Magician, as well as the Mystic, is capable of experiencing the Dark Night of the Soul; all genuine Hermetic initiation creates that effect. I have had several in the past and will probably have several more in the future. 

However, I wouldnt, as often is seen in discussions, equate the Dark Night with depression per se as it is the direct effect or consequence of initiation and spiritual pursuit, not simply the result of coping with the general hardships of life. Thus one has to separate clinical depression and ordinary or mundane melancholy from the apparent melancholy or frustration affected by the Dark Night of the Soul.

All spiritual paths and the followers thereof distance themselves from the material world to a certain extent, Theurgy as well as Mysticism. Perhaps the modern or post-modern image of the Theurgist (such as in Neo-Paganism) klings to the material world, but if you look at the ancient Theurgists, such as the pagan neo-platonists (who invented the term) they certainly didnt follow the path of wordly matters. I doubt that they themselves (i.e. the neo-platonists) made this post-modern dichotomy between Mysticism and Magic. The reconstructed paganism of today is not the paganism of the ancients, such as the Hellenistic neo-platonists.

Thus the path of Theurgy and Alchemy is about leaving the material and searching the spiritual in a gradual ascension. The Dark Night, which is experienced along this path (to test ones commitment) is about feeling being renouced by God, the experience of lost contact or communication with the Higher Self (or with the Holy Guardian Angel for that matter), the feeling of being alone in the spiritual plane, a spiritual void; loosing your motivation of pursuing the Great Work. Oftentimes one looses focus from the spiritual and start to kling to the material; a species of renouncement of the spirit. It is the counter initiatic force which drags one back to the material; it is a counter-force necessary for the refinement of the soul.

The very essence of the Dark Night of the Soul is the process of first gaining connection and communication with the divine and then to lose it.Thus, this process may be likened to losing a lover or friend, a true crisis of a spiritual nature. Everline Underhill wrote a very good definition in her book Mysticism
The Dark Night of the Soul, once fully established, is seldom lit by visions or made homely by voices. It is of the essence of its miseries that the once-possessed power of orison or contemplation now seems wholly lost. The self is tossed back from its hard-won point of vantage. Impotence, blankness, solitude, are the epithets by which those immersed in this dark fire of purification describe their pains.
Some post-modern neo-pagans hold that the Christian and Neo-Platonic division between Spirit and Matter is a faulty one, that everything belongs to the whole, that matter is equally spiritual as Spirit. These voices dispute an apparent dualism imposed by the idea of a spiritual ascension, such as expressed in traditional Hermeticism and Qabalah.

For me spirit and matter are simply two designations of two opposite poles on a contiuum of frequencies which we may refer to as substance. There is only one substance which transcends the duality of matter and spirit, yet there is a difference of quality between the finest segment of substance (i.e. spirit) and the coarsest (matter), although both partake of the same ALL. Alchemy is about changing of the frequency of vibration from coarse to fine, or the reverse. However, the Adept knows that spirit is above matter in a hierarchical order. Spiritual development for me is evolution of consciousness which entails the raising of the vibratory pitch gradually. The Great Work is about spiritualisation of matter, i.e. not to abandon matter but to live in it according to spritual principles, not materialistic and wordly. An Adept is not a man or woman of this saturnine world; he may rule it but he is a child of the Sun, of the Solar World. In a way, the Children of Key XIX of the Tarot reflects the stature of true Adepts.
 
The Eastern principle of Maya, or the sense of illusion, only concerns the reduction of existance to what is tangible, denying the spirit behind the matter. An Adept doesnt deny the existence of matter but he or she sees it as the outward expression of spirit. As an Adept one tries to raise oneself from the purely Saturnine bodily existance and to awaken the Solar body within oneself. The restoration, or Tikkun ha-Ohlam, is about raising the sparks from the entrapment of fallen matter and to retreive them back to their source in the Light. Tikkun ha-Ohlam according to Isaac Luria and Nathan of Gaza epitomize the goal of the Great Work.

The original question was if the Dark Night of the Soul phenomena can also be applied to Theurgy and Magic. Well, I guess it depends upon which perspective you have on matter. One that recognises that spirit pervades matter and is the source behind it - the one that advocates a Path of Return to a more primordial state - surely can incorporate a Dark Night. But if ones spirituality is matter-based, if it doesnt entail sacrifice and renouncement of purely materialist pursuits (such as wordly power, social standing and riches) perhaps one may escape the Night. Thus the question is not a dichotomy between mysticism and magic but rather between one type of magic and another type of magic.

The traditional view on Theurgy has its basis in Neo-Platonism, which (through its theory of emanation) in fact incorporates the belief in ascension and gradual purification onto spirit. This is also the doctrine of the Holy Qabalah; the Tree of Life is a species of a Jacobs Ladder, which initiation tries to emulate. That is why the Dark Night of the Soul is a very real experience in a Golden Dawn initiatory context.

The Scarab from the North

IN THE PAST I have been accused of worshiping Samuel Liddell MacGregor Mathers. Although I do respect the man’s work with the modern hermetic revival my greatest hero is actually the great Polish Adept and alchemist Michael Sendivogius (1566–1636) who was referred to as Heliocantharus Borealis (“scarab from the north” or “the worshiper of the northern sun”). He was well aquainted with John Dee and Edward Kelley, as well as a favorite in the courts of the Bohemian Emperor Rudolf II and the Polish (and Swedish) King Sigismund III Vasa. He is also one of the few proto-modern Adepts who reputedly succeded with the Great Work of producing the Philosophers Stone, which is on record at the beforementioned courts in Prauge and Cracow. With an Polish ancestry and being a permanent resident of Sweden I feel a strong spiritual sympathy with this cosmopolitan Scarab from the North

On my Gyllene Gryningen Blog I have written about Sendivogius before, in my quite popular essay The Rosicrucian Kingdom of Poland. But here I would like to address a point in that great Polish Adepts writing which bears quite some significance on the current state of the Order in Scandinavia or Hyperborea. Let me quote from Sendivogius’ preface to his Tractatus de Sulphure Altero Naturae Principio (“A Treatise on Sulphur and Other Natural Principles”) from 1613: 
The times are at hand when many secrets of Nature will be revealed to men. The Fourth or Northern Monarchy is about to be established; a happy age is coming; enlightenment, the Mother of Sciences, will soon appear; a brighter Sun than in any of the preceding three Monarchies will rise and reveal more hidden secrets. This Monarchy (as the ancients foretold) God’s Omnipotence will found by the hand of a prince enriched with all virtues who, it is said, has already appeared in this present age. In this our northern region we see a prince of uncommon wisdom and valour, whom no king can surpass in victories or in love of men and God.
There is no doubt that in this Monarchy God will reveal to us more secrets of Nature than it took place in the pagan darkness or under the rule of tyrants. Philosophers used to describe these Monarchies not according to their powers but by their placement and the parts of the world they cover. On the first place they place the Eastern, then the Southern, then the Western and finally the Northern and last one which is expected in these countries and about which I will speak at length in my Harmonia.
In this Northern coming polar Monarchy (as the Psalmist says) mercy and truth will meet together, peace and justice will kiss each other, truth will spring up from the ground, and righteousness will look down from heaven. There will be one Shepherd and one fold, and knowledge will be the common property of all without envy. I look forward to all this with longing. (Translated by A.E. Waite.) 
Now, this sentence bears a direct reference to the first Rosicrucian Manifesto published one year later, in 1614, entitled Fama Fraternitatis, which states that 
In Politia we acknowledge the Roman Empire and Quartam Monarchiam [“Fourth Monarchy”] for our Christian head. 
The reference to “a brighter sun” that will rise in Sendivogius preface is clearly and actually a reference to the statement in the Fama of the appearance of an “Aurora, or some clearness, or divine light in the sky”. Let me quote that important paragraph from the Fama in full for greater elicudation:
Howbeit we know after a time there will now be a general reformation, both of divine and humane things, according to our desire, and the expectation of others: for it is fitting, that before the rising of the Sun, there should appear and break forth AURORA, or some clearness, or divine light in the sky; and so in the mean time some few, which shall give their names, may joyn together, thereby to increase the number and respect of our Fraternity, and make a happy and wished for beginning of our Philosophical Canons, prescribed to us by our brother R.C. and be partakers with us of our treasures (which never can fail or be wasted) in all humility, and love to be eased of this worlds labor, and not walk so blindly in the knowledge of the wonderful works of God.
Thus, what we see here in both Sendivogius words and that of the Fama Fraternitatis, which were published simultaneously, is a reference to a Nascent Aurora of the North. This Aurora mentioned in the Fama is clearly the Aurora Borealis (“Northern Light”), announcing the advent of the Forth Monarchy as foretold by Heliocantharus Borealis. In the Hermetic Order of the Nascent Aurora (H∴O∴N∴A∴) we have set as our mission to manifest a Novo Aurora Nascente in Hyperboreawhich from a spiritual point of view sets out to epitomise what that great Polish Adept and our Rosicrucian predeccessors prophesised exactly four Centuries ago, starting with the Vernal Equinox of 2014.
